The Eagles will be looking to avoid the sweep when they take the field tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
"Today was not our best effort," head coach
Dave Tollett said. "Mike pitched very well but we needed to score some runs for him. We left six more runners on base today and that's just not going to get the job done."
Mike Murray (West Palm Beach, Fla./Forrest Hill HS) battled through 8.1 innings of work on Saturday afternoon, allowing six hits and one run while striking out seven. The junior has struck out 84 batters now this season which are a new career-best ahead of his total of 79 from a season ago.
Sterling Koerner (Fort Pierce, Fla./John Carrol HS) would record the final two outs of the ninth in relief of Murray who left after throwing 121 pitches.
At the plate four different Eagles would each pick up a hit and five different hitters would strand at least one runner. Four hits are the fewest for FGCU in a game since Apr. 18 when they only managed three opposite Kennesaw State. The Green and Blue had four hits in a game on one other occasion this season, opening day vs. Central Michigan.
Matt Reardon (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) and
Nick Rivera (Cape Coral, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) bookended the hits for FGCU with singles in the first and ninth innings, respectively.
Colton Bottomley (Parkland, Fla./Marjory Stoneman Douglas HS) went 1-4 but left two runners on in the ninth while
Brady Anderson (Arcadia, Fla./DeSoto HS) provided the fourth hit with a 1-2 effort.
Murray gave up a double to Grant Massey would one out in the top of the first but worked out of the jam and would retire the next 12 batters he faced before giving up a one-out single to Hunter Hanks in the top of the fifth. Chucky Vasquez followed that single with a double to the gap in right-center, driving in the game's only run. Murray would give up singles in the sixth and seventh innings and worked a perfect eighth before being replaced by Koerner after a one-out single in the ninth.
In the bottom of the ninth,
Tyler Selesky (Estero, Fla./Estero HS) led off by drawing a four-pitch walk from Passantino who had only walked one other batter to that point in the game. After a mound visit, Rivera singled a 1-1 pitch to shallow center, putting two runners on base for
Jake Noll (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte HS). Noll worked a 2-2 count before bouncing a ball to second. The Bisons got Rivera at second but Noll beat the throw to first and Selesky moved up to third to leave runners on the corners.
Lipscomb would change pitchers at that point, bringing in Ziegler who was in search of his fourth save.
Zach Spivey (Ormond Beach, Fla./Spruce Creek HS) came to the dish with a 26-game reached-base streak on the line. He squared to bunt the first pitch out of Ziegler's hand but popped it up in shallow foul territory down the first base line. Adam Lee hustled over and made a sliding catch to record the second out of the inning. Bottomley then came up representing the last hope for the Green and Blue but it wasn't meant to be as the junior skied a fly ball to straight-away center to end the game.
ATLANTIC SUN CHAMPIONSHIP The Eagles will once again host the Atlantic Sun Championship Tournament at Swanson Stadium this season. The event is set to take place May 20-23 and the top six teams in the standings at the end of the regular season will advance to the championship and compete in a double-elimination style tournament to determine the A-Sun's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament. The Eagles are four-time A-Sun Regular Season Champions with the most recent title coming in 2014.
