@FGCU_MBB Adds Forward Kevin Mickle To Bolster 2015-16 Roster

DUNK CITY, Fla. – The FGCU men's basketball team has added 6-7 power forward Kevin Mickle as the junior college transfer has signed a National Letter of Intent and will join the Eagles for the 2015-16 season. Mickle will have three years of eligibility with the Eagles and is able to play beginning this fall.

Mickle, who will be a redshirt sophomore next year, nearly averaged a double-double for JUCO Broward College this past year with 13.6 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. He started 29 games for the Seahawks and led them in field-goal percentage (54.7), offensive rebounds (121), total rebounds (275) and blocks (48). Additionally, Mickle finished last year ranking 10th in the nation by grabbing 4.2 offensive rebounds per contest.

"Kevin is a high-energy guy who will put forth a lot of effort," said FGCU head coach Joe Dooley. "He's got a personality and will be a real good fit for what we're trying to do and we expect him to play a lot of minutes. We've got a young frontcourt, and with him having three years he'll have a lot of time to continue to develop."

Mickle was selected as the NJCAA Region 8 Player of the Week in January after averaging 27.5 points, 12.5 rebounds, 2.5 blocks and 2.5 steals to help Broward to a pair of conference wins. In those victories, Mickle scored 31 and 24 points, respectively, while shooting 10-15 from the floor and 11-14 from the free-throw line in the first game and 11-17 in the second contest.

In Broward's 12 conference games last year, Mickle bettered his season averages as he netted 14.7 points per game and also connected at a better rate from the floor as he shot a gaudy 59.7 percent. Broward – which is located in Fort Lauderdale and in the Division-I level of the National Junior College Athletic Association – finished 22-8 last year and was ranked as high as 3rd in the NJCAA Region 8 Poll under the guidance of head coach Bob Starkman, who in January was named to the Florida College System Activities Association's Hall of Fame.

Prior to his time at Broward, Mickle spent the 2013-14 season as a freshman at Central Connecticut State where he redshirted. A native of Brooklyn, Mickle attended powerhouse St. Benedict's Prep in New Jersey where he graduated in 2013 and was one of an incredible six players on the 2012-13 team who signed with D-I teams, including former Syracuse standout and current Milwaukee Bucks guard Tyler Ennis.

Mickle is the second junior college transfer to sign with the Eagles this month. Jonathan Milligan, a 6-2 guard from Kilgore College in Texas, committed on Apr. 17 and will have two years of eligibility beginning immediately.

FGCU finished 22-11 (11-3 Atlantic Sun Conference) last year as the Eagles are one of less than 50 programs in the nation that have claimed at least 20 wins in each of the past three seasons. The Green and Blue made its third-different postseason appearance in only four years of eligibility in 2014-15 as it hosted a CIT (CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament) contest after going to the NIT in 2014 and Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament in 2013.

COACH DOOLEY
FGCU is led by head coach Joe Dooley, who recently finished his second year with the Eagles and has coached six all-conference selections during those two seasons. He guided FGCU to its first Atlantic Sun Conference Regular-Season Championship and first trip to the NIT in 2014, and in 2015 he led the Eagles to their third-straight 20-win season and third-straight postseason appearance with a berth in the CIT. Prior to arriving in SWFL, Dooley spent 10 seasons as an assistant at Kansas under head coach Bill Self. During those 10 seasons, Kansas produced 300 wins, nine straight Big 12 regular-season titles, six Big 12 Tournament championships, six NCAA Sweet 16s, five NCAA Elite Eight appearances and two Final Fours, including the 2008 National Championship. Dooley recently completed his sixth season overall and has a record of 101-76, and in his two years with FGCU is 44-24.
