No. 1 @FGCU_MTEN Advances to A-Sun Final with Win Over No. 4 Stetson

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. –After resuming play, the top-seeded FGCU men's tennis team (16-5) defeated No. 4 Stetson (12-10) by a 4-2 score on Sunday morning at the North Florida Tennis Complex. The Eagles will face No. 2 North Florida today at approximately 1 p.m. Impending weather in the area could force the match to be moved to Monday, Apr. 20.

"What an unbelievable match," said head coach CJ Weber. "Both Stetson and us played some great tennis, hats off to all the players!"

Before play was suspended on Saturday, Apr. 18, senior co-captain Jordi Vives (Barcelona, Spain/IES Ferran Tallada/USC) and junior Eduardo Alfonzo (Valencia, Venezuela./Barry University) won in the No. 1 doubles slot, cruising past Chester Espie and Loic Blanco, 8-2. The junior duo of Ricky Ventura (Barcelona, Spain/University of Barcelona) and Lucas Vaz (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Fleming/Tulsa) clinched the doubles point for the Eagles with an 8-4 decision over Laurynas Antropikas and Simon Julin in the No. 2 slot.

Vives also won his singles match against Nathan Debut on Saturday night by a 6-1, 6-2 score in the No. 1 slot. Once play resumed on Sunday morning, Eduardo Alfonzo ousted Graham Ball in the No. 5 slot by a 6-4, 7-5 count.

With FGCU leading 3-2, senior co-captain Tianyu Bao (Tianjin, China/Bayshore HS (Bradenton, Fla.)) clinched the match for the Eagles with a victory over Simon Julin in the No. 4 slot. After dropping the first, 6-7, Bao bounced back to win the last two sets in dominating fashion, 6-1, 6-2.

"What a gift Bao gave this program again with another pressure filled clinch!" added Weber. "We had played great doubles, Jordi was nothing but business and Edu couldn't have been more disciplined at the end of his match. Even the guys who lost or didn't finish competed well. It was great energy, and now we need to continue to focusing on ourselves heading into the final. I can't wait for it to start!"
