KISSIMMEE, Fla. – After another round of strong scores, the FGCU women's golf team maintained second place at the 2015 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship. The Eagles carded a team score of 298 during the second round at Reunion Resort and now sit 22 strokes behind tournament leader, Kennesaw State and nine strokes ahead of UNF in third place.
Â
The team recorded a score of 303 during the first round on the Tom Watson course and holds a total score of 601 after two rounds. The Owls of KSU scored 287 in the first round and now possess a total mark of 579 to lead the field of eight teams. FGCU is plus-25 after the second of three rounds.
Â
Kennesaw and FGCU were the only two teams to maintain their position from the first round. KSU's top ranking is a product of the three best individual scores as the Owl's Dulcie Sverdloff leads the field at 142 through two rounds, even with par. Each of the five golfers in the KSU lineup hold a position among the top-10.
Â
North Florida stands in third place with a combined score of 610, while Jacksonville and Stetson hold fourth and fifth at 613 and 614, respectively. Lipscomb, Northern Kentucky and USC Upstate round out the field in sixth, seventh and eighth.
Â
"Today overall was a solid round for us," said head coach
Sarah Trew. "We have been close to breaking 300 all spring and it is nice to reach our goal. We got out to a really hot start today but made a few mental mistakes in the middle of the round. I am very pleased at the way we rebounded from those mistakes though, as we showed a ton of mental toughness. As a team, we are striking the ball very well and have a lot of confidence. Tomorrow hopefully we can get a few more putts to drop. Myka and Maddie played really solid for us today and I am proud of them for hanging in there. Chelsea had five birdies today and bounced back nicely."
Â
Mei Khuan Yong (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia/S.M.K. Cochrane) recorded the strongest round for the Eagles in the second round with an even-par score of 72. Yong carded four birdies, shaving strokes off at holes 1, 3, 14 and 18 with just four bogeys on the day. With a total score of 146, Yong stands tied for third place, just two strokes over par and four strokes behind Sverdloff.
Â
Senior
Chelsea Guoynes (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central High School) also holds a top-10 ranking through the first two rounds, with a total score of 148. Guoynes shot a 75 in the second round, with birdies on holes 3, 8, 9, 13 and 14. Guoynes' score suffered as a result of one poor hole, but the senior maintains a tie for sixth place in the field of 40 golfers.
Â
Freshman
Madison Easterbrook (Burlington, Ontario/Aldershot High School) jumped 10 positions on the individual leaderboard during Monday's round with a score of 74. Easterbrook took five strokes off her first-round score and now sits tied for 14th with a total score of 153. She recorded birdies on holes 5, 6 and 14 with five bogeys on the day.
Â
Sara Detlefsen (Eagan, Minn./Minnesota Virtual Academy) and
Georgia Price (Bude, England/Fort Myers High School) rounded out the team's producers during the second round with scores of 79 and 77, respectively.Â
Â
Detlefsen stands in a tie for 19th place with a total score of 156, while Price holds a tie at 24th at 157 through two rounds.
Â
Price improved her first-round score by three strokes with birdies on 1 and 15 and 12 holes at even par.
