@FGCU_WGolf Holds Second Place After First Round of #ASunWGolf Championship

Guoynes leads the team with a plus-one score of 73

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – With four scores in the 70s, the FGCU women's golf team produced a strong first round for second place at the 2015 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship. The Green and Blue compiled a team score of 303 through the first of three rounds at Reunion Resort to hold second in the field of eight teams at plus-15.

The Eagles sit 16 strokes behind tournament leader, Kennesaw State, who shot a 287 with the field's top-three individual scores in Sunday's round. FGCU leads Jacksonville by one stroke and Lipscomb by five strokes, while UNF sits in fifth place with a mark of 312 in the first round. USC Upstate, Stetson and Northern Kentucky round out the field, each with scores of 313 or higher.

"Today we got off to a little bit of a bumpy start," said head coach Sarah Trew. "I think there were quite a few nerves on the front nine. We made a few bogeys but really started to turn it around the second nine. We always talk about finishing strong and they did just that today. I could not be more proud of the team for how they gutted it out and fought back in the final nine. We had three birdies on the final hole. We are striking the ball very well right now and I want to see that confidence carry over to tomorrow."

In the first round on the Tom Watson course, the team was led by senior Chelsea Guoynes (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central High School), who ranked fourth in the field of 40 golfers just one stroke above par. Guoynes carded a score of 73 in the first round with bogeys on holes five, 12 and 14 and birdies on holes nine and 18. Guoynes sits three strokes out of the individual lead, held by KSU's Dulcie Sverdloff.

Mei Khuan Yong (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia/S.M.K. Cochrane) stands second on the team and also ranks among the top-10 with a sixth-place standing through the first round. Yong shot a plus-two 74 on the day with four bogeys and birdies on holes nine and 17.

"I am proud of Chelsea and Myka for their play today," noted Trew. "Both were so consistent and played within themselves and didn't try to force the issue."

Sara Detlefsen (Eagan, Minn./Minnesota Virtual Academy) also carded a strong score for the Green and Blue with a 77 in the first round. Detlefsen sits in a tie for 13th place with a plus-five score of 77 and producing birdies on holes six and nine and adding six bogeys on the back nine.

Rookie Madison Easterbrook (Burlington, Ontario/Aldershot High School) and senior Georgia Price (Bude, England/Fort Myers High School) round out the Eagle lineup with scores of 79 and 80, respectively.  Easterbrook started the day with a birdie on the first hole but saw six bogeys and one double to produce a plus-seven score. Price went plus-eight on the day with eight bogeys.

The team will tee off with top-ranked Kennesaw State Monday morning between 8:45 a.m. and 9:21 a.m. for the second of three rounds at Reunion Resort.
