FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU baseball team (19-17-1, 6-3 A-Sun) needed a pair of wild comebacks and some extra-inning heroics from Nick Rivera to overcome the Jacksonville Dolphins (16-19, 3-3 A-Sun) by a score of 8-7 in 10 innings in the series finale on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles trailed 5-0 before rattling off a five-run seventh then trailed by two in the ninth before scoring three runs to walk off with the series victory. FGCU will welcome No. 17 FAU (26-8, 11-4 C-USA) to Swanson Stadium on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

FGCU is now 6-3 in Atlantic Sun play and are in a three-way tie atop the conference with North Florida (27-12, 6-3) and Stetson (19-18, 4-2). The Eagles own the head-to-head tiebreaker over North Florida and have yet to square off with Stetson who dropped two of three to USC Upstate (13-23, 4-5) this weekend. FGCU took two of three from Upstate a week ago and therefore would currently hold the tiebreaker over Stetson at the moment.

The Eagles were led at the plate by non-other than Nick Rivera (Cape Coral, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) who went 3-5 on Sunday afternoon, scoring once and driving in three including a pair of RBI's to clinch the game in the 10th inning on a double to deep center. Rivera is now hitting an FGCU best .389 this season with 43 RBI, 13 doubles and seven home runs. He has 16-multi-hit games and is slugging .659 to go with a .494 on base percentage.

Tyler Selesky (Estero, Fla./Estero HS) also added three hits, a run and an RBI. Jake Noll (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte HS) went 2-3 at the dish with a run, an RBI, two walks and a stolen base, settling his average at .358. Noll now has a career-best 16-game hitting streak. Freshman Matt Reardon (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) stayed hot at the top of the order with a 2-6 effort. He would score twice and drive in a run while Blake Berger (Jacksonville, Fla./Santa Fe College) added a pair of hits as well.

Jordan Desguin (Newport Beach, Cal./Newport Harbor) made the start on the mound and worked through 6.0 innings, giving up three runs, two earned and struck out five without factoring in the decision. FGCU would use three relievers that stemmed the gap between Desguin and Garrett Anderson (Arcadia, Fla./DeSoto HS) who went 3.1 innings and gave up two runs to pick up his third win of the season.

"Anytime you can win a series, especially in our conference, it's just big," head coach Dave Tollett said. "To come from five runs down to tie the game and come from two runs down in extras to win it is just very big for this ball club. I hope we can build on it and carry it into another game against a ranked opponent in FAU on Tuesday. We've been playing very well of late and we're just going to keep building on this."

After an uneventful first inning, Austin Hays led off the top of the second with a single that skipped just past the outstretch glove of Selesky. After a batter's interference call that retired Cameron Gibson, Samuel Armstrong popped a long home run over the right-center field wall to push the Dolphins ahead 2-0. Desguin would give up a walk then pick up a fly out and a strikeout to end the inning.

JU would come to the plate and tack on another run when J.J. Gould stroked a solo shot over the left field wall to make it 3-0. The deficit would grow to 5-0 in the top of the seventh. Nick Deckert (Tallahassee, Fla./Tallahassee CC) took over for Desguin to start the frame and gave up a leadoff single. Two subsequent sacrifice but attempts would be thrown away by Deckert, loading the bases. Garrison Vandeventer (Ocala, Fla./North Marian HS) took over to face the right hand hitting Angelo Amendolare. The JU second baseman would send a fly ball to right, deep enough to bring in a run. Devin Smeltzer (Voorhees, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep) took over on the mound next and gave up a single to Connor Marabell that brought in the fifth run of the game. Anderson pinned it down from there to limit the damage.

In the bottom of the seventh, FGCU would rally. Berger doubled off the wall in right with one out and with two outs, Reardon came to the plate and reached on a fielding error by Amendolare. Berger would come around to score on the play. Selesky followed with a single through the left side, forcing JU to go to the bullpen. Rivera took the first pitch he saw from the new arm and ripped a double down the left field line, driving in one run to make it 5-2. Noll then singled up the middle to move Rivera to third and score Selesky. Noll stole second to move into scoring position with Zach Spivey (Ormond Beach, Fla./Spruce Creek HS) at the plate. The freshman laced a hard-hit single to right and drove in both runners to tie this game at five-all.

The Eagles would threaten to walk-off in the bottom of the ninth when Selesky led off with a single of the middle. Rivera would lay down a sacrifice but to move the Estero native into scoring position for Noll. Brian Pruett (Sarasota, Fla./Coastal Carolina) took over for Selesky on the base paths and Noll would be intentionally walked to get to Spivey who flew out to right. Pruett advanced to third on the play but would go no further as a strikeout would end the inning.

Anderson would see two JU runs cross the plate in the top of the 10th inning, both unearned. In the bottom half of the inning, with the Eagles trailing 7-5, Brady Anderson (Arcadia, Fla./DeSoto HS) led off with a single down the left field line that scooted under the glove of the diving Dolphin third baseman. Berger would take a 3-2 pitch and rip it into left for a single to put two on and bring the winning run to the plate. Zachary Orchard (Cambridge, Ontario/Jacob Hespeler SS) pinch-ran for Berger with Eggnatz at the plate. Anderson capitalized on a ball in the dirt that drew in the JU third baseman and stole third to put runners on the corners. Reardon followed with a single to left to make it 7-6. Pruett followed with a walk to load the bases for Rivera who got a 1-0 fastball and drilled it to deep center, over the head of the JU center fielder to walk-off with the game-winning hit.
