FORT MYERS, Fla. –
The FGCU baseball team (8-8-1) scored 15 runs on 15 hits on Sunday afternoon then rode a great performance on the mound from freshman Devin Smeltzer to a series sweep of Western Michigan (5-7) by a score of 15-4. The Eagles will welcome No. 11 Miami (9-5) to Swanson Stadium for the first time in program history on Tuesday with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Smeltzer (Voorhees, N.J./Bishop Eustace HS) rolled to the first victory of his career on Sunday. The freshman tossed 6.2 innings and allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out five. Four relievers would guide FGCU the rest of the way. At the plate it was a weekend to remember for FGCU who came into the weekend hitting just .255 as a team. Adam Eggnatz (Tampa, Fla./Middle Georgia College) added three more hits on Sunday afternoon giving him seven for the weekend and bumping his average up to .404 and extending his season-best hitting streak to nine games. Jake Noll (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte HS) also extended his hit streak to 12 games, going 1-3 with a pair of RBI. There would be five Eagles that would pick up multiple hits on Sunday and six would drive in multiple runs.

"The team I saw today looked a lot more like the team I know we can be," head coach Dave Tollett said. "That was so much more like us. We pitched well and maximized our opportunities to score and that's all you can ask for. Now we have a tough Miami team coming in on Tuesday, let's see if we can keep this thing going."

The scoring in this one would get started in the bottom of the second when Tyler Selesky (Estero, Fla./Estero HS) singled with one out. Brian Pruett (Sarasota, Fla./Coastal Carolina) would follow by getting hit by a pitch then it was Matt Reardon (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) who walked to load the bases. With two outs, Noll walked as well to drive in the first run of the ball game. Zach Spivey (Ormond Beach, Fla./Spruce Creek HS) then ripped a single to center to drive in two more and push the Eagles ahead 3-0 through two innings.

Western Michigan got two runs back in the top of the third but the Green and Blue would respond in the bottom half. Eggnatz singled up the middle with one out then stole second to put a runner in scoring position for Selesky who singled through the left side but not deep enough to score Eggnatz. Pruett then took a 1-2 offering and drove a triple off the wall in left center to give the Eagles a 5-2 lead. Reardon swung at the next pitch thrown and singled to left to drive in Pruett.

The score would hold at 6-2 for a while as Smeltzer settled in after a shaky third and began to roll through the WMU lineup. In the bottom of the sixth, pinch-hitter Kyle Gilbert (Lake Mary, Fla./Seminole HS) doubled to deep center then moved up to third on a Noll sacrifice. Spivey would be hit by a pitch to put runners on first and third with one out for Nick Rivera (Cape Coral, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) who crushed a 3-1 pitch into the gap in right center for a double, scoring Gilbert and moving Spivey up to third. Colton Bottomley (Parkland, Fla./Marjory Stoneman Douglas HS) followed with a single down the left field line to drive in Spivey. After a pitching change, Eggnatz came to the plate and singled as well to bring both Rivera and Bottomley, putting FGCU up 10-2 through six.

The Broncos scored their last two runs in the top of the seventh and the 10-4 lead would last until the bottom of the eighth when the Eagle bats shook loose again. Bottomley and Eggnatz led off with back-to-back walks and Selesky would reach on a fielder's choice putting runners on first and third with one out. Pruett walked to load the bases, bringing up Reardon who doubled down the line in right, scoring two runs. Following a walk to KK Daniel (St. John's Fla./Bishop Kenney HS), Noll came to the plate and walked for a second time with the bases full to drive in a run and make it 13-4. Spivey then reached on a fielder's choice that saw the second out made on a force at home. With the bases still loaded, Rivera singled to right driving in the final two runs of the game.

Jordan Desguin (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) took over in the ninth and shut the door to secure the 15-4 victory for FGCU. The Eagles would total 38 hits for the weekend which are by far the most of any weekend series so far this season. FGCU is now 6-0 all-time against Western Michigan with all meetings taking place at Swanson Stadium.

NEXT UP
FGCU will remain home on Tuesday to host nationally ranked No. 11 Miami (9-5) at Swanson Stadium for the first time in program history. The Eagles outhit Miami last Wednesday but ultimately fell 7-3. First pitch for the Battle of the Birds on Tuesday is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

The first weekend road trip for the Eagles will take place Mar. 13-15 with a trip to Lincoln, Nebraska to visit the Cornhuskers (7-5) for the first time in program history. Nebraska racked up 41 wins last season with 18 coming in conference play and would advance all the way to the Big Ten title game. Despite a loss in the conference championship game, Nebraska advanced to the NCAA Regional but were knocked out by Cal-State Fullerton.
