FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women's tennis team (7-9, 4-0 Atlantic Sun) extended its winning streak to five matches with a 6-1 victory over UTSA (9-11, 1-4 Conference USA) on Sunday afternoon at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
"The girls competed well today," said head coach
Courtney Vernon. "They're making steps, and we must continue to focus on sticking to our plan when we are competing. We are looking forward to playing North Florida next Saturday morning."
The duo of
Elizabeth Means and
Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) defeated the Roadrunners' pair of M. Rosell Canudas and Jacobea Junger by a 6-2 count in the No. 1 doubles slot while
Johanna Sterkel (Schwetzingen, Germany/Carl-Theodor-Schule HS) and
Alex Landert (Naples, Fla./Seton Hall) picked up the second match win in doubles play over Daniela Garcia-Diaz and Lina Hallgren to give the Eagles the first point by an 6-4 score in the No. 3 doubles slot.
Breana Stampfli (Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago/St. Joseph's Convent) continued her strong play with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Jacobea Junger in the No. 2 slot.
Sterkel cruised to a 6-3 victory in the first set against Alena Shichkova in the No. 3 slot before winning the match after a challenging second set by a 7-5 score. With the win, the junior improves her record to 12-3 during the dual season. Sterkel has been a strong force in the middle of the Eagles' lineup as the Schwetzingen, Germany native has wins over opponents from UCF, No. 61 Georgia State, No. 59 USF and No. 9 Miami.
In the No. 4 slot,
Elizabeth Means battled Nicole Karaklis and earned the victory during the third set tiebreaker. Means dropped the first set by a 6-7 score before bouncing back to win the second set, 6-4. The junior then won the third set tie breaker by an 11-9 count.
Candela Munoz Giron (Alicante, Spain/Troy) continued her excellent form with a 6-1, 7-6 victory over Lina Hallgren in the No. 5 slot.
Rounding out the day for the Eagles was Landert in the No. 6 slot. The junior won her first set by a 6-2 count against S. Madronal Medina before falling in the second set by a 4-6 score. Landert rallied in the final set to win by a 6-3 count.
The Green and Blue will return to the courts next weekend when they play North Florida on Saturday, April 4 at 10 a.m. and Marquette on Sunday, April 5 at 10 a.m.
