STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. – With a team score of 312, the FGCU women's golf team holds a tie for ninth place after one round of play at the John Kirk Panther Intercollegiate. The Eagles are tied with Elon and Louisiana Monroe and sit just 10 strokes behind tournament leader, Troy.
Â
Through the first of three rounds at Eagle's Landing Country Club, FGCU leads Appalachian State, Seattle, Jacksonville State and Atlantic Sun foe Stetson. Troy leads the field with a 302, while Morehead State and Old Dominion take a tie for second at 304. Host Georgia State stands just ahead of the Eagles with a 307 and an eighth-place standing.
Â
Junior
Sara Detlefsen (Eagan, Minn./Minnesota Virtual Academy) leads the Green and Blue with an even score and is tied for second place in the field. Detlefsen's 72 stands just one stroke behind the event's individual leader and is tied with two others.
Â
Starting on hole 10, Detlefsen carded just one bogey in her first four holes and added birdies on 14 and 18 to make the turn at one under. The added bogeys on holes 2 and 9 and picked up another birdie on eight to finish with the team's strongest round.
Â
"What an outstanding round Sara put together today," said head coach
Sarah Trew. "I can't say enough about how hard she has been working and I am ecstatic to see it pay off. Maddie [Easterbrook] really grinded out her round today and put together a good number for us. She got up and down from everywhere today and it just goes to show us that we don't have to hit perfect to score well. Tomorrow we need to focus on eliminating the big numbers and understanding that bogey is sometimes a good score. If we can keep that third and fourth score under 80, we will post a good score."
Â
Madison Easterbrook (Burlington, Ontario/Aldershot High School) stands tied for 24th in the field with a score of 77. Easterbrook carded four bogeys on her front nine, but was consistent on the back nine, with eight pars and a single bogey on hole 7. Â She finished at plus five in the team's first round.
Â
Senior
Chelsea Guoynes (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central High School) carded an 80 for the Eagles and recorded the team's only double birdie with just three strokes needed on the par-five 18th hole. She also carded a birdie on hole 13, but used four bogeys, a double and a triple to stand at plus eight on the day.
Â
Georgia Price (Bude, England/Fort Myers High School) and
Mei Khuan Yong (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia/S.M.K. Cochrane) rounded out the Eagles' lineup with scores of 83 and 85, respectively. Price finished at plus 11, with Yong checking in at plus 13 at the Eagles Landing Country Club.
Â
FGCU will continue action at the John Kirk Intercollegiate Monday and Tuesday at Eagle's Landing. The team will tee off in Monday's round on hole 1 beginning at 9:15 a.m. Live scoring will be available via GolfStat.com, with final results on FGCUAthletics.com.
