Comer Named To NABC All-District 1st Team, Thompson To All-District 2nd Team

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Statistically the two most decorated players in FGCU men's basketball program history, Brett Comer and Bernard Thompson have each been tabbed as NABC All-District selections for 2014-15 with Comer being named to the First Team and Thompson to the Second Team, as announced Friday by the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

Comer (Winter Park, Fla./Winter Park HS) and Thompson (Conyers, Ga./Rockdale County HS) were named to the District 3 Team, which includes all schools from the Atlantic Sun and Big South conferences. Comer is just the second FGCU player in program history to be named to the First Team (Sherwood Brown, 2013) after being selected as a Second Team member last year. Thompson, meanwhile, repeats on the Second Team after earning a spot on the team last season as well.

"It's another good honor and recognition for both Brett and Bernard," commented FGCU head coach Joe Dooley. "Not only this season, but throughout their careers, Brett and Bernard have been two of the best players in the region and it's good to see them get recognized for that once again."

Comer – who was also named to the A-Sun All-Conference First Team and A-Sun All-Tournament Team this past season – will graduate ranking 24th on the all-time NCAA career assist list as the A-Sun career assists leader by more than 200 issued an astounding 845 helpers for his tenure, including 236 this past year against only 80 turnovers. Comer also grabbed more than 100 rebounds in each of his four years in the Green and Blue while scoring nearly 1,500 career points. He's one of only a handful of players in NCAA history with at least 1,400 points (1,477), 450 rebounds (453) and 845 assists.

The 6-3 guard averaged 12.4 points per game in 2014-15, but increased that average to a team-best 14.3 in A-Sun games – the eighth-best in the league. He also led the A-Sun in assists by a wide margin as his 236 total (7.2 per game) were 94 more than anyone else in the league. Comer was responsible for each of the top six assist games by an individual in the A-Sun this past year. In the 137 career games he played for FGCU, Comer led the Eagles in assists 125 times.

Seven of Comer's 17 career 20-point games came this year, with five of them against A-Sun opponents. He was named A-Sun Player of the Week on Feb. 9 after just missing the program's first triple double with 21 points, 12 assists and eight rebounds at Stetson. He finished his career with 11 double-doubles, six of which came this past season, including two of the program's three all-time 20-point, 10-assist double-doubles.

A two-time A-Sun First Team selection, Comer became just the 25th player in the 36-year history of the league to be recognized on the First Team two times. In addition to being named to the First Team in 2014 and All-Freshman Team in 2012, Comer was also a two-time A-Sun All-Tournament Team selection and Tournament MVP in 2013.

Thompson is FGCU's all-time leading scorer with 1,835 points for his career, ranking him 14th on the A-Sun career scoring list. The 6-3 guard led the Eagles in scoring this past season with 13.8 points per game and ranked second on the squad with 160 total rebounds – 114 of which came on the defensive end to tie for the team lead in that category.

He set the A-Sun career steals record by recording three pilfers at Jacksonville in the regular-season finale, and his 262 total makes him one of only two players in league history (which dates back to 1978-79) with at least 240 career steals. Thompson's 1.7 steals-per-game average ranked third in the A-Sun this past year while playing 32.2 minutes per game – the sixth-most in the conference.

Against Ohio on Nov. 19 of this past season, Thompson set an FGCU Division-I program record by netting 34 points on a career-high 14 field goals. A versatile player throughout his career, he was the only player in D-I this past year who had at least 1,800 career points, 600 career rebounds (623) and 250 career steals.

The 2013 A-Sun Defensive Player of the Year, Thompson was named to the A-Sun All-Freshman Team in 2012 and also landed on the A-Sun All-Conference First Team and A-Sun All-Tournament Team in 2014. He was named A-Sun Player of the Week in November and A-Sun Co-Player of the Week in December following standout performances.

After joining FGCU as freshmen in 2011-12, Comer and Thompson led the Eagles to the Sweet Sixteen as a No. 15 seed in 2013. Last year they helped guide the program to its first A-Sun Regular Season Championship and berth in the NIT before another postseason appearance in the CIT earlier this month capped their brilliant careers and three-straight 20-win campaigns.

Comer and Thompson rank in the top-5 all-time in program history in six key statistical categories, including ranking first and second in three of them (points, field goals made and free throws made). Comer finished his career with 239 more assists than anyone else in FGCU history, while Thompson capped his tenure in the Green and Blue with 68 more steals than anyone else. The duo has played in more games (271) and started more contests (263) for the Eagles than any other combo in program lore.

FGCU was the only A-Sun school to have two players represented on the District 3 Team. A-Sun Player of the Year Ty Greene from USC Upstate was tabbed to the First Team, while UNF's Dallas Moore landed on the Second Team.

COACH DOOLEY
FGCU is led by second-year head coach Joe Dooley, who coached three all-conference selections during his first season and guided FGCU to its first Atlantic Sun Conference Regular-Season Championship and first trip to the NIT. Prior to arriving in SWFL, Dooley spent 10 seasons as an assistant at Kansas under head coach Bill Self. During those 10 seasons, Kansas produced 300 wins, nine straight Big 12 regular-season titles, six Big 12 Tournament championships, six NCAA Sweet 16s, five NCAA Elite Eight appearances and two Final Fours, including the 2008 National Championship. Dooley recently completed his sixth season overall and has a record of 101-76, and in his two years with FGCU is 44-24.
