Freshman
Zach Spivey collected a career-high and FGCU season best four hits while
Jake Noll drove in four runs to highlight the offensive effort for FGCU.
Spivey (Ormond Beach, Fla./Spruce Creek HS) went 8-12 at the dish this weekend for a .667 clip while scoring three times and driving in a run. The freshman raised his average for the season to .347 which ranks second on the team behind only
Nick Rivera (Cape Coral, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) who is cruising along at .355 with a team-high 18 RBI and five doubles which are second only to Spivey's six. Rivera would go 5-10 this weekend with a run and four RBI.
Not to be forgotten is FGCU's preseason All-American
Jake Noll (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte HS) who went 7-13 at the plate this weekend against the Wildcats. He would score twice and drive in a five runs, giving him 16 for the season which are already more than halfway to his 2014 total. Noll would also steal three bags this weekend giving him a team-high nine for the year. On Sunday afternoon Noll would be the catalyst for the FGCU attack, going 3-4 with four RBI.
"It was nice to see our bats carry us today," head coach
Dave Tollett said. "While, as a coach, you hope to pitch a little better than we did today it is still good to see that our bats can pick up the slack and go win a game for us. A sweep like this is huge, that's a quality program over there that is always at or near the top of their league. It's the first time we've ever swept them in a weekend set so it feels good."
Josh Dye (Deland, Fla./Deland HS) made the start for the Eagles on the mound and would strikeout two over 3.0 innings, giving up just one run. He would be replaced by
Jack English (Delray Beach, Fla./Cardinal Newman HS) who struggled, giving up three runs before turning things over to
Sterling Koerner (Fort Pierce, Fla./John Carrol HS) who also gave up three runs.
Jordan Desguin (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) settled things down, working 2.0 innings of no-hit ball and it was
Garrett Anderson (Arcadia, Fla./DeSoto HS) who came on to get the six-out save, his second of the year.
The scoring would get started in the bottom of the first.
Matt Reardon (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) led off with a walk and a sacrifice bunt would move him into scoring position for Noll who singled up the middle allowing Reardon to score from second. Noll would hustle in to second on the play and Rivera would follow with an RBI single of his own to make 2-0 Eagles through one.
The Green and Blue would extend their lead in the bottom of the second.
Brady Anderson (Arcadia, Fla./DeSoto HS), who was making his second start of the season in the DH spot, walked to lead off the frame. Another sacrifice bunt moved Anderson into scoring position for
Zach Orchard (Cambridge, Ontario/Jacob Hespeler SS), who was making his first-career start behind the plate, and he singled to center to make it first and third with one out. Reardon then laid down a perfect bunt down the first base line that the pitcher would throw away, allowing Anderson to score and moving Orchard over to third. Noll then singled and drove in two more runs to make it 5-0.
A solo homerun by Bethune-Cookman in the third made it 5-1 and the Wildcats would tack on five more runs on four hits with the help of one error in the fourth to take a 6-5 lead. In the top of the fifth, B-CU would extend its lead with a two-out rally that resulted in its seventh run.
The score would stand until the bottom of the seventh. Spivey led off for the Eagles and stroke a 2-2 pitch into right for his third hit of the day. Anderson then bunted and reached on a fielder's choice to make it first and second for
Adam Eggnatz (Tampa, Fla./Middle Georgia College) who singled with a beautiful bunt down the third baseline to load the bases.
Kyle Gilbert (Lake Mary, Fla./Seminole HS) sent a sacrifice fly to deep left, driving in a run to cut the deficit to 7-6. Reardon followed with a walk to load the bases once again, forcing B-CU to go to the bullpen.
Tyler Selesky (Estero, Fla./Estero HS) walked to drive in the tying run and Noll followed with another walk to give the Eagles an 8-7 lead. Rivera then came to the plate and lifted a single to left to make it 9-7 and complete the scoring in this one for FGCU.
Bethune-Cookman would add a run in the top of the eighth but that would be all it would get off of Anderson who worked out of a jam in the eighth and tossed a perfect ninth to secure the victory for the Green and Blue. FGCU now holds the all-time series lead of B-CU 10-8.
NEXT UPFollowing a midweek tilt with USF (12-6-1), Mar. 24 at Swanson Stadium the Eagles will head to Coral Gables to face Miami for a third time (Mar. 25) before kicking off Atlantic Sun play at North Florida (14-8) Mar. 27-29. FGCU took two of three from the Ospreys during the regular season in 2014 then eliminated them from the A-Sun Tournament in the first round. The Ospreys posted an overall record of 22-31 and played their way into the A-Sun Tournament with an 11-16 league record. FGCU holds the edge in the all-time series, 17-7.
