LP | Alex Seibold (2-2): 4.1 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 4 SO FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU baseball team (10-12-1) got another brilliant performance on the mound on Saturday afternoon in the form of a complete-game, 10 strikeout outing from
Brady Anderson. It was Anderson's first complete-game of his career as he guided the Green and Blue to a 6-1 victory over Bethune-Cookman (6-19, 6-3 MEAC) and put his team in position to get a second-consecutive weekend sweep at home.
Anderson took the hill to make his third start of the season and first since Feb. 22 opposite Fordham. He had made seven relief appearances since his last start and entered the matchup with an ERA of 5.19 over 26.0 innings. He would get rolling from the start however and his 10 strikeouts, which are a career-high, now account for 30 percent of his 2015 total (30) and he would retire each of final 12 batters he faced in the game after giving up a hit to begin the sixth.
"Brady was great today," head coach
Dave Tollett said. "That is definitely the best he has pitched this year and maybe the best he's ever pitched for us. He really put his on his back and once we started scoring runs he just got better and shut the door. Now we want to go get that sweep."
At the plate it was
Jake Noll (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte HS) and
Zach Spivey (Ormond Beach, Fla./Spruce Creek HS) leading the way with two hits each while six different Eagles would collect an RBI, a season high, including freshman
Zach Orchard (Cambridge, Ontario/Jacob Helpeler SS) who doubled and drove in a run in his FGCU debut. The bottom half of the order produced in a big way as everyone in spots 6-9 drove in a run.
An all-out pitcher's duel would keep the scoreboard clean over the first three innings. Bethune-Cookman managed one hit in the top of the second but that was all until the top of the fourth rolled around. With one out, FGCU shortstop
Matt Reardon (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) fielded a ball and made a throw across the diamond that pulled
Nick Rivera (Cape Coral, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) off the bag, allowing the runner to reach safely. The runner would steal second and a subsequent single to left would drive in the first run of the game, putting B-CU ahead 1-0.
In the bottom of the fourth it was FGCU that began to roll. Noll led off with a single to right and Rivera walked to put runners on first and second. A sacrifice bunt would move both runners into scoring position for Spivey who beat out an infield single, driving in Noll to tie the game and advancing Rivera to third.
Adam Eggnatz (Tampa, Fla./Middle Georgia College) then lifted a sacrifice fly to left, driving in Rivera and giving the Eagles a 2-1 lead. Orchard's RBI double to deep right came next and he would be followed by a
Kyle Gilbert (Lake Mary, Fla./Seminole HS) single through the left side to make it 4-1.
Tyler Selesky (Estero, Fla./Estero HS) led off the bottom of the fifth with a walk and would be sacrificed into scoring position by Noll. Rivera then ripped a single to left and drove in Selesky before being thrown out at second on the play. That would be all for the Eagles in the fifth but the lead was extended to 5-1. Anderson struck out two in the sixth and two more in the seventh.
FGCU came to bat in the bottom of the eighth and with two outs, Reardon singled through the right side on a 2-2 offering. Selesky then tripled, his first of the season, to deep right off the wall, scoring Reardon and pushing FGCU ahead 6-1. Anderson would work a perfect ninth to shut the door on Bethune-Cookman.
FGCU will return to Swanson Stadium tomorrow to complete its three-game set with Bethune-Cookman at 1 p.m.
NEXT UPFollowing a midweek tilt with USF (12-6-1), Mar. 24 the Eagles will head to Coral Gables to face Miami for a third time (Mar. 25) before kicking off Atlantic Sun play at North Florida (14-8) Mar. 27-29. FGCU took two of three from the Ospreys during the regular season in 2014 then eliminated them from the A-Sun Tournament in the first round. The Ospreys posted an overall record of 22-31 and played their way into the A-Sun Tournament with an 11-16 league record. FGCU holds the edge in the all-time series, 17-7.
