FORT MYERS, Fla. – Mike Murray became the fifth pitcher in FGCU baseball (9-12-1) history to record 20 wins when he tossed a complete-game shutout opposite Bethune-Cookman (6-18, 6-3 MEAC) on Friday night under the lights of Swanson Stadium. The junior cruised through his outing, striking out four while getting five runs of support from the Eagle offense to account for the 5-0 victory.

Murray (West Palm Beach, Fla./Forrest Hill HS) allowed six hits but no runner reached second base until the ninth inning. His four strikeouts now give him 43 for the season and he once again worked a walk-free start while lowering his ERA to 2.47 and needed just 112 pitches to complete this one. Murray will now be in hot-pursuit of the career wins record of 25 currently held by FGCU pitching coach Pete Woodworth.

This is not the first complete-game for the FGCU ace but rather is third. Murray became just the second pitcher in FGCU history to throw back-to-back complete games a season ago. Ricky Knapp did so in March of 2012 when he went the distance against North Florida and East Tennessee State in consecutive outings.

"Mike was excellent for us tonight," head coach Dave Tollett said. "We've struggled a little bit lately; that's no secret and it's nice, as a coach, to have a guy like Mike who you can trust to go out and just dominate for a night. We needed that out of him and he gave us a huge lift. Our bats responded to how well he was pitching and it shows that when we put it together we are a tough team to beat."

At the plate the Eagles were led at the top by freshman Matt Reardon (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) who went 2-5 with a pair of doubles in each of his first two at-bats. He would also score the run in the first which ultimately proved to be the game-winner. Jake Noll (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte HS) got back on track going 2-5 with an RBI while Nick Rivera (Cape Coral, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) went 2-4 behind Noll with an RBI as well. In the No. 5 spot in the order, Colton Bottomley (Parkland, Fla./Marjory Stoneman Douglas HS) went 1-3 with an RBI while Zach Spivey (Ormond Beach, Fla./Spruce Creek HS) went 2-4 in the eight-hole with a run. Tyler Selesky (Estero, Fla./Estero HS) while not registering a hit, did manage to score three runs for the Eagles.

In the bottom of the first, Reardon led off with a double to left center. Selesky squared to lay down a sacrifice bunt but the pitcher would throw the ball into right field on the play, allowing Reardon to circle the bags and score the first run of the game. Noll then beat out a bunt single down the third baseline and stole second to put runners on second and third with no outs. Rivera then came to the plate and ripped a single through the right side, driving in Selesky for the second run of the innings. The next three Eagles would be retired but damage had been done as the offense had given Murray a 2-0 lead.

Spivey singled to lead off the bottom of the fourth and would be sacrificed into scoring position for Reardon who bounced out to second, sending Spivey to third. Selesky would walk but the fourth ball would sail past the glove of the Bethune-Cookman catcher, allowing Spivey to score and push FGCU ahead. 3-0. Noll then came to the plate and drilled a triple to deep right-center field, his first of the season, to drive in Selesky and push the lead to 4-0.

In the bottom of the sixth, Selesky walked with one out and would move up to third when a pick-off attempt would bounce past the Wildcat first baseman and down the right field line. Noll would rip a hard ground ball to third that the B-CU fielder couldn't handle, putting runners on first and third with one out. Rivera would strike out swinging, bringing up Bottomley with two outs. He would single to left center, driving in Selesky and giving the Green and Blue a 5-0 lead.

Murray would make things a little interesting in the top of the ninth. He would give up a leadoff single before getting a fly out for the first out of the frame. Robinson and Caballo of B-CU followed with back-to-back singles, loading the bases for Clay Middleton who lined out to Noll for the second out. Welch came to the plate with the bases still loaded and two away but Murray got him to bounce into a fielder's choice, ending the threat and the game.

FGCU will return to Swanson Stadium tomorrow to continue its three-game set with Bethune-Cookman at 2 p.m.
