KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - Â With two rounds of play complete, the FGCU women's golf team stands among the top 25 teams at the 2015 Edwin Watts Kiawah Island Spring Classic. The Eagles shot a combined score of 312 Monday on the Osprey Point Golf Club to improve two positions and currently hold a total score of 637 (325-312).
Â
FGCU saw strong improvements in the second day of the nation's largest women's collegiate event and moved ahead of William and Mary and Towson. Four of the team's five competitors recorded better scores in the second round to shave 13 strokes off the team's first-round score. The host College of Charleston shot a tournament best 288 Monday to move in to the tournament leader position with Troy, North Florida, Stetson and Elon rounding out the top five, all with scores at 603 or better.
Â
FGCU saw consistent scores as all five players recorded scores within six stokes of each other. However, no Eagle broke 80 as the team ranked in the bottom half in the unprecedentedly large field. The Eagles sit 20 strokes out of the top-10.
Â
"We played better today and were able to move up a couple spots which I am proud of," said head coach
Sarah Trew. "We really had it going on the front nine and lost some shots coming in on the back. Maddie [Easterbrook] and Sara [Detlefsen] we on the verge of having really good rounds today and I really feel like they are on the verge of breaking through. We put ourselves in a hole after the first round and are determined to dig ourselves out tomorrow. At the end of the day, this tournament will make us stronger because we are pushing ourselves outside of our comforts zone by learning to adapt to different courses and weather conditions."
Â
Madison Easterbrook (Burlington, Ontario/Aldershot High School) leads the Green and Blue with a total score of 157 through two rounds. The freshman carded an 80 in the first round and improved with a 77 in round two to rank 59th in the field of over 200 golfers.
Â
Mei Khuan Yong (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia/S.M.K. Cochrane High School) took three strokes off her first-round score and cared a 78 in Monday's round. Yong now stands at 159 with a tie at 78th place.
Â
Sara Detlefsen (Eagan, Minn./Minnesota Virtual Academy) matched Easterbrook for the team's best performance with a 77 Monday for a seven-stroke advance from Sunday's round. Detlefsen now stands with a total score of 161.
Â
Senior Georgia Price (Bude, England/Fort Myers High School) and
Rebecca VanEtten (Trinity, Fla./J.W. Mitchell High School) rounded out FGCU's lineup with scores of 83 and 80, respectively. Price holds a total score of 163 with one round remaining, while VanEtten stands at 166.
Â

FGCU will tee off at 9 a.m. on holes four and five with no. 24 and 26 teams, Boston College and William and Mary.
