@FGCU_Softball Picks Up Wins Against Eastern Michigan and Rhode Island

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLEARWATER, Fla. – Action at the USF Under Armour Invitational resumed on Sunday Mar. 1 after a thunderstorm cancelled all game action on Saturday. On the final day of the tournament, the FGCU softball team (10-11) picked up wins against Eastern Michigan (5-8) and Rhode Island (0-8) by a 9-0 and 3-1 count, respectively.

The Eagles had originally been scheduled to play Eastern Michigan and Maine on Saturday, Feb. 28 and Illinois on Sunday Mar. 1, but played Eastern Michigan and Rhode Island on Sunday due to travel circumstances for other teams.

"For the most part we were really efficient in all aspects of the game," said head coach David Deiros. "We played the game the right way today and it showed with two solid victories."

The games were highlighted with two complete game victories from senior Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Sante Fe HS) and junior Ashley Dobson (Wheatfield, Ind./Kankakee Valley HS) along with sophomore Jeanie Verderese's (Jacksonville, Fla./Creekside HS) first ever collegiate homerun.

GAME ONE
Morgan took the circle in the first game of the day against the Eagles of Eastern Michigan. The senior improves her record to 4-1 after the seven-inning shutout.

Eastern Michigan was unable to score any runs in the game and never really threatened the Green and Blue. FGCU scored nine runs in the game to back the excellent pitching from Morgan.

Freshman Kelsey Huff (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Dwyer HS) went 2-3 on the game with three stolen bases and three runs scored while senior Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) was a major contributor as well going 2-2 with three RBI on two sacrifice flies. Before her homerun in game two, Verderese hit a two run single.

GAME TWO
Dobson improved her record to 3-2 on the season after a complete game victory over Rhode Island. The junior only allowed one unearned run in the 3-1 win for the Eagles.

The Green and Blue took a 1-0 advantage in the second inning when freshman Ashley Swiderski (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier HS) sent the ball into left center with two outs for an RBI double that scored Kasandra Castle (Lake Worth, Fla./Palm Beach Central HS) who reached on a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch.

After Rhode Island tied the game at one, Verderese sent a moon shot over the left field fence to give the Eagles a 2-1 edge. Freshman Brittany McGuire (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra HS) hit a single to lead off the sixth inning before Kori Dunn (Chuluota, Fla./Lake Howell HS) pinch ran for her and stole second. Dunn advanced to third on a single to center off the bat of junior Alexis Ross (Cape Coral, Fla./Ida S. Baker HS). Freshman Chandler Middlebrook (Auburndale, Fla./Auburndale HS) then added an insurance run on a pinch-hit RBI single to left that scored Dunn.

The Green and Blue will return to action next weekend when they host the FGCU/Four Points by Sheraton Spring Break Classic from Friday, Mar. 6 until Sunday, Marc 8. The Eagles will play LIU Brooklyn, Boston University, Quinnipiac and Pittsburgh.
