FORT MYERS, Fla. – With a third-round score of 309, the FGCU women's golf team concluded play at the Eagle Invitational Sunday afternoon in fifth place. The Eagles' total of 936 (308-319-309) through the three-day event at Stoneybrook Golf Club gives the team its highest finish of the 2014-15 season.
Â
The Eagles started their only home event of the season with a 308 Friday afternoon but struggled in the chilly Saturday weather. Backed by strong third-round scores from
Madison Easterbrook (Burlington, Ontario/Aldershot High School),
Georgia Price (Bude, England/Fort Myers High School) and
Mei Khuan Yong (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia/S.M.K. Cochrane), the Eagles regained composure in the last round and held on to the fifth-place standing at +72 on the weekend.
Â
Elon took hold of first place and never relinquished the lead through three rounds of play. The Phoenix finished with a team score of 901 (290-308-303) to lead the rest of the field by 17 strokes. Toledo and Daytona State tied for second place at 918, while Xavier finished at fourth place with a total of 925.
Â
The Green and Blue finished ahead of nine other teams in the 14-squad field, including Atlantic Sun foes USC Upstate and Northern Kentucky.
Â
"I would like to thank Stoneybrook and the Hilton Garden Inn/Homewood Suites for everything they did to make this event a huge success," said head coach
Sarah Trew. "We were able to put on a first-class event that showcased FGCU and our facilities. I'm really proud of how this team hung in there today and grinded out a top-five finish. We are really close to playing some of our best golf yet. If we can cut down on the big numbers and get our four scores under 80, we will see some breakthroughs. This team is determined and I can't wait to get to our next event!"
Â
Prince led the Eagles on the weekend with an eighth-place finish. Price carded a +4 score of 76 in Sunday's round after producing rounds of 75 and 77 earlier in the weekend. Her final score of 228 gave her a finish among the top-10 in the field of 84 golfers.
Â
In Sunday's round, Price carded two sets of back-to-back bogeys, on 2 and 3 and again on 14 and 15 to go up four strokes but added a birdie on 7 to counteract a bogey on 11 and finished with a +4 score of 76.
Â
Just four total strokes behind Price was Yong. Yong tallied a +5 score in the final round with three bogeys and a double on 8. She recorded 14 pars, including a span of eight straight to rank second on the team and 15 overall with a three-day total of 232.
Â
After producing a score of +14 Saturday, Easterbrook responded well in the final round of action and carded the team's best performance of the day. The rookie teed off on 16 in the shotgun start and quickly compiled four birdies in five holes between 18 and 5. Â Although she dropped five strokes on the front nine, Easterbrook completed the round with a +2 score of 74. Overall, Easterbrook finished 26th with scores of +6, +14 and +2.
Â
Sara Detlefsen (Eagan, Minn./Minnesota Virtual Academy) rounded out the team's contributors with a +10 score of 82 on the final day of competition. Detlefsen carded scores of +6, +8 join the +10 to rank tied for 31st with a total of 240.
Â
While competing as an individual, senior
Chelsea Guoynes (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City High School) recorded a score of +6 in Sunday's round. Guoynes shaved six strokes off her round 2 score with 11 pars and a birdie on 17 en route to finishing the event with a total score of 250.
Â
The Eagles will continue the spring slate in two weeks when they travel to Kiawah Island, S.C. for the Edwin Watts Spring Classic, hosted by the College of Charleston. The three-day event begins Mar. 1.
