Troy Snaps @FGCU_MTEN’s Five-Match Win Streak, 4-3

DAYTONA BEACH Fla. – The FGCU men's tennis team (5-2) claimed the doubles point, but was unable to keep the momentum in singles play as it suffered its second loss of the year against Troy University (6-4), 4-3, at the City Island Tennis Courts in Daytona Beach.

"Today was a tough match," said head coach CJ Weber. "Troy has a really good team and they took if from us. Both teams fought with a lot of energy and intensity. It was a really competitive college tennis match. Now we have to reset and get ready for Bethune-Cookman tomorrow."

The senior co-captain duo of Tianyu Bao (Tianjin, China/Bayshore HS (Bradenton, Fla.)) and Jordi Vives (Barcelona, Spain/IES Ferran Tallada/USC) got the Eagles going with a 6-2 win in the No. 1 slot over Moreno and Lau. In the No. 3 slot, the junior duo of Ricky Ventura (Barcelona, Spain/University of Barcelona) and Lucas Vaz (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Fleming/Tulsa) gave the Green and Blue the doubles point after a 6-3 win over Bustamante and Samaha.

In the singles action, Ventura gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead after a 6-3, 6-3 score over Bustamante in the No. 4 slot. However, Troy started its comeback bid as the Trojans tied the contest with a pair of wins in the No. 5 and 6 slots. Vives claimed a 3-2 lead for the Eagles after a win over Ndayishimye in the No. 1 slot, 6-4, 7-5. Ndayishimye, currently ranked No. 954 in the world, was Vives' second win in a row over an ATP World Tour ranked opponent as the Barcelona, Spain native bested No. 71 Miami's Lomacki, who is currently ranked No. 736 in the world, last weekend.

The Trojans leveled the match at 3-3 as Andres Alfonzo (Hollywood, Fla./Texas Christian University) fell by a narrow margin against ITA No. 89 Gabriel Dias by a 7-6 (5), 6-4 count. In a winner-takes-all No. 3 slot match, Eduardo Alfonzo (Valencia, Venezuela./Barry University) went down early in the third set and ultimately lost to Andy Lau 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

The Eagles will look to get back to their winning ways Saturday at 11 a.m. against Bethune-Cookman in Daytona Beach.
