SERIES HISTORYFGCU and UMass met for the first time last December about an hour from the Minutemen's campus as part of the Basketball Hall of Fame Holiday Showcase at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass. The Eagles earned arguably their most impressive road regular-season triumph in program history with an 84-75 win over the Minutemen to move to 8-1 to start last season. FGCU entered the contest with an RPI of 46, while UMass sat at 39 and had earned an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament the year prior.
Â
SCOUTING UMASS^ The Minutemen are coming off a 67-63 loss at UCF on Tuesday night as they trailed by as much as 15 in the first half before erasing the deficit but falling short in the closing minutes.
^ Trey Davis (17.8 points per game), Jabarie Hinds (16.9 ppg) and Donte Clark (16.9) lead a three-headed offensive attack for UMass.
^ UMass opened the season 4-0 – including a win over Clemson – before falling to Creighton, 97-76, in Las Vegas the day before Thanksgiving. The Minutemen bounced back with a 99-69 triumph over Boston University, but have since dropped consecutive games to Ole Miss, 74-64, and UCF.
^ 1995 UMass graduate Derek Kellogg is in his 8th season at the helm of the Minutemen and boasts a 131-104 overall record. Kellogg was a four-year letterwinner at UMass, making four NCAA Tournament appearances and a Final Four – which was later vacated by the NCAA – under head coach John Calipari.
Â
CHALLENGING STRETCHStarting with UMass, each of FGCU's next four opponents all have an early-season RPI better than 130, with the average RPI being 97: UMass (127), South Dakota State (105), Louisiana Tech (72) and South Dakota (87).
Â
Aside from a trip to Sioux Falls for a quasi-road game against South Dakota just after Christmas, FGCU will not play a game away from The Nest until Jan. 21. Of the nine home opponents over the next month, four made postseason appearances last year and two others (UMass, La Salle) are Atlantic 10 Conference members, traditionally one of the best non-Power 5 leagues in the nation.
