KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Following standout seasons in which they were each lauded with the highest individual awards the conference bestows, FGCU men's soccer seniors
Aaron Guillen,
Rodrigo Saravia and
Nathan Ingham were all recognized as NSCAA All-Region performers this week.
Atlantic Sun Conference Defender of the Year
Guillen (El Paso, Texas/Coronado HS) was named to the NSCAA All-Southeast Second Team, while A-Sun Player of the Year
Saravia (Guatemala City, Guatemala/College Internacional Montessori) and A-Sun Goalkeeper of the Year
Ingham (Keswick, Ontario/Keswick HS) were tabbed to the Third Team.
"Being recognized as some of the best players in the Southeast is an extremely rewarding and well-deserved honor for Aaron, Rodrigo and Nathan," said FGCU head coach
Bob Butehorn. "Those three have been the cornerstone of our program for the past several years, and they helped build the foundation and expectations for future teams."
The trio – who are all first-time representatives by the NSCAA – are the first FGCU selections to the NSCAA all-region teams since
Felipe DeSousa was named to the Third Team in 2013. Guillen, Saravia and Ingham are three of 11 total A-Sun players who were recognized as all-region performers by the NSCAA.
Guillen served as a central defender for the Eagles and was a core member of the backline since stepping foot on campus. Like Saravia, he was a four-time all-league pick as he was tabbed as an A-Sun All-Freshman Team member and then an A-Sun First Team selection each of the past three years. Over the past four years, FGCU has played 69 games, and Guillen has appeared in 68 of them while starting 67 times.
This past year he was the backbone of FGCU's league-leading defense as the Eagles again paced the conference in nearly every key category. The Green and Blue led the A-Sun in goals allowed (13 – nine fewer than any other team), goals against average (0.88 – .45 better than any other team) and shutouts (seven – two more than any other team). Additionally, in A-Sun games, FGCU allowed just one goal in five matches and finished with a goal differential of +14.
Saravia has controlled the middle of the pitch for FGCU for the past several years, and was rewarded for his outstanding play this season. Saravia has been an all-league selection every year he's worn the Green and Blue as he was an A-Sun All-Freshman Team pick, A-Sun Second Team selection as a sophomore and a two-time A-Sun First Team member.
He started 12 of the 13 games he appeared in this year and posted a career-high three assists – including both helpers in FGCU's 2-1 win at Brown. His 1,097 minutes this past season were the most by any non-defender or goalie on the FGCU roster as he orchestrated the Eagles' gameplan on a daily basis.
Ingham is a two-time A-Sun First Team member as he led the league this past season in nearly every goalkeeping statistic. He played in 12 games (11 complete games as he missed two-and-a-half with an injury) and in those 11 contests he posted a league-leading seven shutouts. He led the A-Sun with a 0.73 goals against average – which was 22nd nationally and 0.60 better than anyone else in the conference.
He allowed nine goals all year, 13 fewer than any other goalkeeper in the league who played at least 1,000 minutes, and he did it competing against the best non-conference schedule in the A-Sun as FGCU faced three top-10 RPI opponents. He led the A-Sun with a save percentage of .800. His seven shutouts this past year were three more than anyone else in the A-Sun as Ingham set the all-time A-Sun career shutout record with his 26th in the regular-season finale. Additionally, he was named A-Sun Defensive Player of the Week on three occasions this past season and a record-tying six times in his career.
FGCU – which was nationally ranked for several weeks this season and as high as 19th – finished the season with a 7-4-3 overall record and secured an unprecedented sixth-straight A-Sun regular-season championship by virtue of a 4-0-1 league mark. The Eagles boast the nation's longest home regular-season conference unbeaten streak at 28 in a row (24-0-4) dating back to the 2008 season, and since 2010 the team has a dominant 36-4-4 record in A-Sun regular-season games.
