@FGCU_WSoccer’s Brittany Brown Named to CoSIDA Academic All-District 4 Team

Brown earns academic acknowledgement and is now eligible for Academic All-American status

FORT MYERS, Fla. — With outstanding performances athletically and academically, FGCU women's soccer goal keeper Brittany Brown earned a position on the 2015 CoSIDA Academic All-District 4 Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors Association Thursday afternoon.

Brown (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena High School) becomes FGCU's fourth district honoree among women's soccer players as Gina Petracco, Jennifer Crittenberger and Brittany Burt were the program's first-ever recipients in 2011.

"Brittany is so deserving of this honor," said head coach Jim Blankenship. "She excels in the classroom and on the field and holds herself to a high standard. I'm proud of all that she has accomplished as a student-athlete and of the way she represents our program."

CoSIDA Academic All-District members are recognized as the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Programs nation wide are divided into eight districts for the first round, which is voted on by that district's sports information directors.

The District 4 team is made up of student-athletes from Division I institutions from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Puerto Rico and South Carolina. To be nominated, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore, a starter or important reserve and must hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or higher.

As a member of the All-District Team, Brown is now eligible for the 2015 All-America Team ballot, where first, second and third team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.

FGCU has previously been recognized with two Academic All-American selections in men's basketball's Beau Bauer (2007) and women's basketball's Sarah Hansen (2013).

As a Biology major, Brown has earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.91 through her four-year academic career and has plans to attend medical school upon graduation. The Eagle goal keeper recorded eight shutouts this season with 46 saves and a goals against average of 0.61. Brown leads the FGCU all-time record books and holds the A-Sun record with 36 career shutouts and tops the FGCU record book with 263 saves, 50 wins and a career goals against average of 0.67.

Brown holds a save percentage of .807 through 18 games this season to rank among the top-25 nationally and produced a record of 11-5-2 to lead the Eagles to their sixth-straight A-Sun regular season title.

The senior was named to the Atlantic Sun Academic All-Conference team earlier this week.

Brown joins Stetson's Danielle Hurme as the A-Sun's only honorees this season and is one of nine members from a program in the state of Florida.

With Brown in net, the Eagles compiled a record of 11-5-2 including a 6-0-1 mark in A-Sun play and earned their sixth-straight A-Sun regular season championship.

As the league champions, the Eagles will hold the No. 1 position in the 2015 A-Sun Tournament and earn a bye in this weekend's first round. The team will begin competition in the A-Sun Semifinals on Friday, Nov. 6 against the winner of the No. 4 Kennesaw State/No. 5 Stetson game and would play in the Championship Sunday, Nov. 8 with a semifinal win. Lipscomb earns the No. 2 seed, with Jacksonville taking No. 3 and No. 6 UNF rounding out the six-team field.

COACH JIM BLANKENSHIP
A veteran of over two decades in collegiate coaching, head coach Jim Blankenship, who was named the 2012 and 2013 A-Sun Coach of the Year as well, has built FGCU women's soccer into a yearly contender in the Atlantic Sun Conference and a rising program in the South Region in just eight seasons. Blankenship, who was recently ranked the no. 6 collegiate coach nationally by AllWhiteKit.com, started the program in 2007 and has since guided the Eagles to nine double-digit win seasons, culminating with Atlantic Sun Regular Season Championships in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and now 2015. In 2011 and 2012 he also led the Eagles to back-to-back A-Sun tournament championships and became the first team in the history of the university to make it to the NCAA Tournament. The Eagles then won the 2014 A-Sun tournament and hosted the first NCAA Championship event on campus when it welcomed Auburn in front of a record crowd. Blankenship has guided FGCU to a 112-41-19 (64.2 W%) overall record through the first nine seasons of the program's existence, including a 60-9-10 (74.6 W%) mark in the A-Sun. Blankenship's impressive career record of 352-112-30 (71.0 W%) over 25 seasons has come while leading FGCU, the University of Miami, Lynn University and St. Thomas University.
