Means Sisters Lead @FGCU_WTEN to Wrap Up 2015 Spring Invite

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women's tennis team concluded the final day of the 2015 FGCU Spring Invite with more victories. Most notable was a dominant performance on the doubles court by Elizabeth and Sarah Means who rolled to a 6-0 victory in the tournament's final match.

"This was a great weekend of competition," head coach Courtney Vernon said. "The ladies got numerous matches in and my number one goal from them this weekend was improving in competition under pressure. They made some good steps and learned a lot in the process. We are looking forward to heading to UCF on Friday."

Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) started the day off right for the Eagles, battling a competitor from Iowa State to a 7-6 (3) victory in the first set before rolling to a 6-1 victory in the second set to take the match. Candela Munoz Giron (Alicante, Spain/Troy) came out on top in her singles bout as well as she was able to produce a 6-2, 6-1 result.

Breana Stampfli (Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago/Saint Joseph's Convent) picked up a big victory in the A-Singles back draw with a 7-5, 6-2 victory and it was Elizabeth Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) winning in the early session 6-2, 6-0 before taking the court right away for a second match in the B-Singles back draw final where she would come from behind in the second set to claim a win 6-4, 6-4. Overall Liz would go 3-0 on the day.

Julianna Curtis (Tampa, Fla./Allendale Academy) picked up a win as well when she went 6-4 before her opponent retired. The lone loss for the Green and Blue came from Alex Landert (Naples, Fla./Seton Hall) who despite the loss battled after winning 6-3 in the first set and falling 6-1 in the second. FALL 2014
The Eagles competed at the Dick Vitale Invite to conclude the fall slate. The final day began with doubles play in the round of 32, where the pair of Stampfli and Curtissaw a hard-fought battle against Tennessee's Tiffany Tavares and Laurenceluc Guevremont. After staying on serve for a majority of the contest, a break on the Eagles near the end of the match gave the Volunteers the lead and ultimately the win at 8-6.

This was the first fall campaign for both Curtis and Stampfli, who joined the Green and Blue in January, 2014. After four tournaments, Curtis leads the team with a singles record of 6-5, Stampfli finished at 5-4.

At the FIU Panther Invitational Sarah Means bested Eastern Michigan's Klara Supejova. After Means won the opening frame, 6-3, Supejova went on to take the second set with the same score. The third set remained close, but a push from Means in the end gave her a win at the 6-4 mark to take the match and the A singles backdraw.

After a first-round loss in B singles, freshman Curtis followed in Means' footsteps and was crowned champion of the backdraw. To earn the title Curtis topped Eastern Michigan's Andrea Martinovska in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0.
