PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Playing in overtime for the first time this season, it took sophomore
Tabby Tindell just 2:10 to score her second goal of the game and provide the game-winning score to lift the FGCU women's soccer team (8-3, 1-0 Atlantic Sun) to a 3-2 victory over the La Salle Explorers (4-4-2) in Philadelphia on Sunday afternoon.
Paulina Speckmaier got the scoring started for FGCU with her fifth of the season and it was
Tindell who matched a pair of La Salle equalizers for the 26th and 27th goals of her career (11th and 12th of the season) to re-establish her program record lead.
Shannen Wacker, who scored twice in the Eagles' 3-0 win over North Florida on Friday, added a pair of assists on Sunday while
Melissa Arnold and
Ashley Parks contributed helpers as well.
With her first assist on Sunday afternoon Wacker became the new FGCU all-time points leader and is now the first player in program history to reach the 70-point plateau. The senior has contributed 25 goals and 20 assists in her career. Her 25 goals rank second all-time behind Tindell and her 20 helpers are third in the program record book.
"Just a fantastic effort by both teams," head coach
Jim Blankenship said. "They were rested and ready and we came out firing but to their credit they battled back late in each half both times we took the lead. We had a lot of chances and their keeper made some great stops to keep them in it but Tabby, Paulina and Shannen continued to show how dangerous they are and that you can't mark just one of them. It was a great road win for us against a truly quality opponent."
La Salle applied the early pressure in this one but it was the Speckmaier who broke through first in the 20th minute. Wacker fed the Miami native near the danger zone and from there Speckmaier worked her way through the middle of the box, past the keeper and served the tally into the lower left corner to put FGCU ahead, 1-0, early.
An FGCU offside call in the 40th minute resulted in a break for the Explorers who moved down the field and fired two quick shots with the second finding its mark past a diving a
Brittany Brown for the game-tying score.
At the halftime break La Salle had outshot the Eagles 8-5 and would end the game with a 19-14 advantage in the shot column despite the FGCU victory. It would be the third time this season that the Green and Blue would be outshot and win. Brown made four saves in the first half and finished with eight, just one shy of her career-high.
With the second half underway both teams traded shots in the early going but the Eagles worked the ball deep into the La Salle zone in the 53rd minute before receiving a corner kick. Arnold served the ball into the box and found the head of Tindell who redirected the service inside the near post to give the Green and Blue a 2-1 lead.
The Explorers controlled the pace of the play for the rest of the second half and would register a second equalizer in the 66th minute to complete the scoring in regulation, forcing overtime for the Eagles for the first time since the 2013 A-Sun Championship match opposite Jacksonville.
In just third minute of the first overtime Parks took a throw-in and found the head of Wacker who flicked the ball on to Tindell, allowing the sophomore to run clean to the top of the box before firing the game-winner past the La Salle keeper to close out this one in favor of FGCU, 3-2. The overtime score is Tindell's 10th game-winning goal of her career, tying Wacker and Lindsay Haw for most all-time.
NEXT UPThe Eagles will continue A-Sun play at USC Upstate on Oct. 3. FGCU took down the Spartans at home last season on senior day by a score of 7-0. Upstate would fail to reach the A-Sun Tournament after posting a 1-7-1 mark in A-Sun play and a 4-11-3 record overall. So far this season Upstate is 2-7 with victories over South Carolina State and VMI. Kenzie Major has accounted for all five Spartan goals this season with four coming in the 4-0 victory over South Carolina State.
From there FGCU heads to Kennesaw State on Oct. 5. The Eagles battled KSU to a scoreless tie on the road last season and the Owls finished 2014 with a 9-9-1 overall record and a 5-3-1 mark in the A-Sun. This season KSU is off to a 3-6-1 start with wins over South Alabama, Austin Peay and Samford. Maggie Gaughn has paced the offense with five goals which are second only to Tindell in the A-Sun standings while Marit Sandtroeen has added a pair.
