FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women's soccer team (4-3) returns home after a two-game absence to take on Wofford (3-2) and CSU Bakersfield (0-7-1) on Friday night at 7 p.m. and Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m., respectively, looking to get back on the winning track after a pair of defeats last weekend. The Eagles will be welcoming both programs for the first time to the FGCU Soccer Complex in the final home contests before Atlantic Sun play begins next Friday (Sept. 26) at North Florida.
Fans can follow the game on Friday night against Wofford via Live Stats (links provided above) or through social media but it will not be video streamed on A-Sun TV. The Eagles will return to A-Sun TV on Sunday when the Roadrunners come to town.
LAST TIME OUTFGCU fell behind nationally ranked South Carolina (7-1) on a bad-luck goal late in the first half and never fully recovered as the Gamecocks were able to shutout the Eagles, 2-0, at Corbett Stadium in the final game of the USF Soccer Classic.
The tilt with No. 16 South Carolina was the second-consecutive match for the Green and Blue opposite a Top 20 opponent. Last Thursday evening the Eagles traveled to College Station, Texas to do battle with No. 12 Texas A&M but ultimately fell 2-1 in front of nearly 3,000 fans.
WOFFORDWofford began the season with three consecutive victories over Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian and UNC Asheville before dropping its first result of the season at Coastal Carolina, 1-0 on Aug. 31. The Terriers then traveled to Clemson and dropped a 1-0 result. Maureen Buff leads the Terriers with four goals while Annika Jansson has scored twice. Wofford closed the 2013 campaign with an 8-5-6 overall record with a 4-2-4 mark in the SoCon and lost to Elon, 1-0, in the semifinals of the Conference Tournament.
CSU BAKERSFIELDOn Sunday the Green and Blue will welcome CSU Bakersfield all the way from Bakersfield, California who will head to Boca Raton to take on FAU on Friday before visiting FGCU. The Roadrunners are off to a difficult start to the 2014 season having scored just three goals against 21 allowed in eight matches.
TOUGH SCHEDULEThe Eagles finished 2013 with the No. 67 RPI in the nation and the 2014 schedule features seven teams that finished ranked inside the top 83, three of which were ranked 15th or better. Those seven team include Arizona (83), Miami (73), La Salle (63), USF (53), Texas A&M (15), South Carolina (14) and UCF (13).
TABBYAlready a two-time Atlantic Sun Player of the Week this season,
Tabby Tindell has tallied a conference-leading six goals, which also rank 23rd nationally, and a pair of assists for a conference-leading 14 points. She has also scored the game-winning goal in each of the Eagles' four victories to this point which are the most game-winning goals in the nation. In recognition of her efforts Tindell is also already a two-time TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Week selection.
Opposite Murray State the Ocala, Fla. native scored to put the Eagles ahead in the 36th minute for her 20th career goal, becoming just the fourth individual in program history to achieve that milestone and later added her second score of the game in the 70th minute to move into a tie for third place at the time on the program's all-time goals list. Add in the game-winning goal opposite FIU in the seventh minute and Tindell now sits alone in fourth on the all-time points list with 48.
Tindell put together one of, if not the greatest individual seasons in program history in just her first year suiting up for the Green and Blue. She established single-season program records in points (34), goals (15), goals per game (0.75), shots (71), shots per game (3.55), shots on goal (44) and shots on goal per game (2.20).
SHANNEN
Shannen Wacker scored her first goal of the season and 22nd of her career in the Eagles 2-1 loss to nationally ranked Texas A&M. The score moved her back into sole possession on the FGCU all-time goals list. She has also contributed five assists already this season which lead the A-Sun and also rank in a tie for 15th nationally.
NEXT UPThe Eagles hit the road once again, this time for four-straight beginning with a trip to Jacksonville, Fla. for a date with North Florida, to begin the defense of their A-Sun regular season title. FGCU downed the Ospreys 3-0 at the FGCU Soccer Complex last season and hold a 5-1-1 all-time series lead. So far this season UNF has posted a 1-6 record with the lone victory coming in the form of a 2-1 result opposite The Citadel.
From Jacksonville the Eagles will fly north to Philadelphia to take on the Explorers of La Salle on Sept. 28. La Salle was 15-5-3 last season and 5-2-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference. The Explorers won their second-consecutive A-10 title on penalty kicks over Dayton, advancing to the NCAA Tournament where they fell to Georgetown, 2-0. It will be FGCU's first meeting with La Salle. The Explorers are 3-2-2 this season with victories over Northeastern, Pittsburgh and James Madison. They will be at No. 21 West Virginia and welcome former A-10 foe Temple before welcoming the Eagles.
