FORT MYERS, Fla.
– The FGCU baseball team (26-15, 11-4 Atlantic Sun) came out hot on Saturday afternoon and put runs on the board early and often to down North Florida (17-23, 7-11 A-Sun) by a score of 11-4 to pick up the series victory.

Jack English (Delray Beach, Fla./Cardinal Newman) took the mound and cruised through 6.0 innings allowing just five hits and giving up one run without striking out a single batter. The righty picked up his third win of the season and lowers his ERA to 2.37. Prior to this one, English had the third best ERA in the A-Sun at 2.49. The combination of Brady Anderson (Arcadia, Fla./DeSoto HS) and Zack Tillery (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier HS) closed this one out for FGCU on the mound.

Michael Suchy (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast HS), Cody Hoffner (Sebring, Fla./Broward College), Blake Berger (Jacksonville, Fla./Santa Fe College), Alex Diaz (Miami, Fla./John A. Ferguson) and Tillery all had three hits on Saturday afternoon, by far the most Eagles with three hits in a single game this season. FGCU would spray 18 hits in all, the second most in a single game this season. Jake Noll (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte HS) went 1-5 and stole his 20th bag of the season, tying him for the single-season program record. Three different players would pick up multiple RBI including Berger who drove in a career-high three runs.

“Jack pitched very well and our bats really came alive for us,” head coach Dave Tollett said. “We needed a strong effort today and these guys understood that. It was an important win for us.”

The Eagles got the scoring started in the bottom of the second when Tillery singled through the left side and Hoffner doubled to right to put runners on second and third for Gage Morey (West Palm Beach, Fla./PB Central). Morey bounced a ball back of the middle and the Ospreys took the out at first allowing Tillery to score. Berger then came to the plate and ripped a single to right to make it 2-0 and force UNF to go to its bullpen early.

In the bottom of the fourth, Hoffner singled to lead off and moved up to second on an error on the same play. Hoffner moved up to third on a passed ball and Morey walked, bringing up Berger for another RBI opportunity. The junior crushed a ball into the gap in deep right-center and cruised into third with the first triple of his career and two more RBI to his credit. Berger would later score on a wild pitch. Alex Diaz and Jake Noll followed with back-to-back singles and Suchy singled to right with one out driving in one and pushing the FGCU lead to 6-0 through four.

English finally surrendered a run in the top of the sixth but FGCU responded in the bottom half. Colton Bottomley (Parkland, Fla./Marjory Stoneman Douglas HS) led off the frame by getting hit by a pitch and Suchy followed with a single. The runners advanced to second and third on a deep fly out and Tillery singled home a pair of runs to make it 8-1. Hoffner singled off a new pitcher and Berger walked with two outs bringing up Diaz who singled and drove in both runners to open up a 10-1 advantage.

FGCU would add an 11th run in the seventh and the relievers would give up just three runs over the final two frames to secure the 11-4 victory. The Eagles will travel to USF on Tuesday before coming home to do battle with Mercer (29-10, 12-4 A-Sun) who is presently the only team ahead of the Eagles in the A-Sun standings. The Bears were chosen as the preseason A-Sun champions while FGCU was picked to finish third.

ATLANTIC SUN CHAMPIONSHIP
For the first time in program history, the FGCU baseball team will play host to the 2014 Atlantic Sun Baseball Championship set to take place May 21-25 at Swanson Stadium. The top eight teams in the standings at the end of the regular season will advance to the championship and compete in a double-elimination style tournament to determine the A-Sun's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament. The Eagles are three-time A-Sun Regular Season Champions and finished second in the league last season.
