Consensus Reached: Evan Dempsey is an All-American with NCBWA honor

NCBWA names Dempsey a First Team selection

DALLAS – For the second consecutive year, Florida Gulf Coast's Evan Dempsey has been a consensus pick as an All-American. The auspicious honor came as the National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association (NCBWA) bestowed First Team All-America honors on Dempsey for the 2026 season.

The selection marks the fourth of the five national publications required to become a Consensus or Unanimous All-American – the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), Baseball America, D1Baseball.com, the NCBWA and Perfect Game. All but D1Baseball.com have announced their All-America teams for this year and those four have listed Dempsey as a First Team honoree, also a requirement.

Dempsey became FGCU's first Consensus All-American last year when the ABCA, Baseball America, D1Baseball.com and Perfect Game all bestowed First Team honors. D1Baseball.com traditionally announces its All-America teams following the College World Series in late June. A Dempsey first team recognition would make him FGCU's first Unanimous All-American in school history.

Previous NCBWA All-America teams from 2000-2025 have featured the likes of C Buster Posey and OF J.D. Drew of Florida State, RHP Paul Skenes of LSU, C Adley Rutschman of Oregon State, 1B Jac Caglianone of Florida, LHP David Price of Vanderbilt, 3B Alex Gordon of Nebraska, SS-2B Rickie Weeks of Southern U., 1B Mark Teixeira of Georgia Tech, RHP Stephen Strasburg of San Diego State and catcher Mike Zunino and RHP Ryan Singer of Florida, among others.

The Atlantic Sun Conference's Pitcher of the Year, Dempsey turned in another spectacular campaign in 2026. He also earned first-team all-conference honors as a pitcher and an outfielder. In addition to being a finalist for the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award, Dempsey was also named a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy and the Golden Spikes Award.

Dempsey started all 57 of his team's games, sporting a .333 batting average, 79 hits, including 18 doubles and 10 home runs, scored 57 runs and tallied 46 RBI. His OPS (.948), on-base percentage (.412) and slugging percentage (.512) ranked among his squad's best. He led his squad with 15 stolen bases on 17 attempts. On the mound, he was simply outstanding. In 15 starts, he posted a 7-2 record with a 3.15 ERA, a league-leading 126 strikeouts, while only walking 26. He netted a 1.06 WHIP and allowed opposing hitters to hit only .209.

Founded in 1962, the NCBWA is dedicated to the advancement of college baseball. Membership is open to writers, broadcasters and publicists of the sport. For more information about the NCBWA, visit the association's official Web site, www.ncbwa.com.
