FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU men's tennis team won at No. 6 singles but fell short against No. 56 UNF, 6-1, on Thursday night in the second ever night match at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
FGCU falls to 5-7 (2-3 A-Sun) on the season and UNF improves to 12-6 (1-2 A-Sun).
The Eagles lost a competitive doubles point to fall behind 1-0 in the match. Junior Jackson Moore (Bradenton, Fla./Lakewood Ranch HS/Georgia State) and sophomore Dean Tsamas (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS) lost to Graham Edgar and Moritz Buerchner, 8-2, at No. 2 doubles. Freshmen Tianyu Bao (Tianjin, China/Bayshore HS) and Michael Beiler (Palm Harbor, Fla./Dunedin HS) took down Leonardo Nahar and Pedro Davisson, 8-6, at No. 3 doubles.
In the final match, the team of senior Matthew Rock (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Fort Lauderdale HS/Jacksonville) and sophomore Lance Lvovsky (Dania,Fla./Broward Virtual School/Jacksonville) lost to Norbert Nemcsek and Daniel Sotomarino, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles.
In singles action, UNF took control with victories at No. 1 and No. 4 singles in straight sets. Buerchner defeated Bao, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 1 singles and Davisson won against Rock, 6-1, 7-5, at No. 4 singles.
Nemcsek won in straight sets against Tsamas, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 3 singles. Beiler picked up a point for the Eagles after defeating Timo Kranz, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 6 singles. Beiler improves to 3-2 in conference matches with the victory.
At No. 2 singles, Moore was defeated by Sotomarino, 6-4, 7-6 (7-1), after dropping the second set tiebreaker, 7-1.
In the final match, Lvovsky lost in straight sets to Nahar, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 5 singles.
The Green and Blue host A-Sun rival Jacksonville on Saturday, March 31 at 10 a.m. at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
