FORT MYERS, Fla. '" Lynn University captured two of three doubles matches and added four wins in singles play for a 6-3 win over Florida Gulf Coast University in Southeast Region men'™s tennis action at the FGCU Tennis Complex Thursday afternoon.
The No. 6 Knights improve to 5-0 on the season. No. 17 FGCU drops to 1-1 in dual match play. The win snapped a two-match winning streak for FGCU against Lynn.
After the Eagles'™ top doubles tandem of seniors
Juan Carlos Osorio (Quito, Ecuador) and
Tim Offerman (Hamburg, Germany) picked up a victory over the Knights'™ Manny Galel and Lorenzo Cava, Lynn came back to win the next two points.
Regnier Azevedo and Dennis Verduin held off
Alberto Gutierrez (Bogotá, Columbia) and
Gavin Manders (Warwick, Bermuda) 8-6 in the second spot. Dennis Riegraf and Julien Carsuzaa followed with an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles over the Eagles'™ freshman tandem of
Edson Lima (Brasilia, Brazil) and
Danny Lee (Naples, Fla.).
Osorio, the third-ranked singles player in Division II, closed the scoring gap with a two-set win (6-3, 6-4) at No. 1 singles over Cava, but Lynn captured the next four singles matches to seal the win. Carsuzaa knocked off Gutierrez 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 while Riegraf, ranked No. 18 in Division II singles, knocked off countryman Offerman 6-1, 6-3 in the third spot. Macko dispatched Manders in two sets (6-2, 6-3) at No. 4 while Azevedo held off Lee with a 6-4, 7-6 (4) win at No. 5.
Lima picked up the Eagles other point with a three-set, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 victory at No. 6 singles.
FGCU returns to the courts when they travel to Florida Tech for a 1 p.m. match on Sunday.
