FORT MYERS, Fla. '" The No. 16 Florida Gulf Coast University men'™s tennis team swept the doubles matches to upset No. 10 Armstrong Atlantic State University 5-4 Friday afternoon at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
The senior tandem of
Richard Stempnowski (Cape Coral, FL) and
Jose Pastrello (Limiera, Brazil) knocked off the top-ranked doubles tandem in Division II, Dale White and Robert Jendelund, 9-8 (5) in a tightly contested No. 1 doubles match. Stempnowski and Pastrello improved their dual match record to 12-1 this spring.
Juniors
Juan Carlos Osorio (Equito, Ecuador) and
Tim Offerman (Hamburg, Germany) captured the second position 8-6, while freshman
Gavin Manders (Warwick, Bermuda) and senior
Seth Fogelman (Naples, FL) were 9-7 winners in the third spot.
The two teams split the six singles matches. Stempnowski, ranked sixth in Division II, knocked off the 47th ranked White in two sets, 6-4 and 6-3. Osorio upset the 27th ranked Jendelund 6-4 and 6-4 (retired) at the third position. Fogelman picked up the Eagles fifth match of the day with a 6-0, 6-4 win over David Secker at No. 5.
FGCU improves to 11-2 and will host Franklin Pierce College on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. Following the match, the FGCU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will be hosting a clinic and carnival for children ages 7-12.
