Ft Myers - The FGCU men's tennis team defeated #9 (NCAA II) ranked Armstrong Altantic 6-3 Thursday afternoon at the FGCU tennis complex.
The Eagles got out to a 3-0 lead early as they swept the doubles matches.
Brothers Evan and Wolfgang Pinther defeated the fourth ranked team in the country (Roth/White) 8-5 in the number one doubles match.
Nestor Nunez and
James Moysey defeated Tim Offermann and Roger Thiele 9-8 in a tiebraker. This was perhaps the deciding match as it gave FGCU the momentum it needed heading into the singles matches.
The #3 doubles team of
Franco Mata and
Richard Stempnowski defeated Jonas Askerland and David Secker 8-6 to complete the doubles matches.
In singles play,
Richard Stempnowski (#1 singles) defeated Roger Thiele 6-2, 7-5. Stempnowski continues to play well as he improves to 11-4.
Nestor Nunez (#2 singles) defeated David Secker 7-5, 6-4 as he improves to 6-5 on the year.
Yuri Mantilla earned the final victory in #6 singles as he defeated Neil Murray 6-4, 6-1. Mantilla improves to 6-2 overall.
The Eagles are now 9-3 and will go on the road today to battle St. Leo at 2:00 p.m.
