TAMPA, Fla. – The day started off with an upset win over UCF in doubles and continued with a win over UCF in singles as FGCU opened the season Friday with the first day at the Bedford Cup on the USF campus.
In all, the Eagles tallied six/seven wins and had four players in singles and two doubles teams advance to the quarterfinal round of their respective brackets. The day included two wins over UCF and Florida A&M and wins over FIU and Stetson.
The action started off on the right foot as
Ashley Matz and
Maria Vargas upended the top-seeded duo of Olivia Bergler and Jade Psonka from UCF, 6-4, to advance to the quarterfinal round. Also advancing to the quarterfinal round was the tandem of
June Bjork and Nora Svenson with a 6-2 win over Florida A&M's Arien Thomas and Gabrielle Pierce.
Pierce would be subject to another loss at the hands of FGCU as
Anjali Kotecha posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over the Rattler player in singles. Vargas claimed a 6-3, 6-0 win over FIU's Aleksandra Simeva, Bjork registered a 6-3, 6-2 win over Stetson's Yuki Mizuguchi and Svensson dealt UCF their second loss to the Eagles with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Psonka.
Sabrina Jaramillo fell in a closely contested second set in a 6-1, 7-5 decision to Stetson's Lena Karolina Hornecka. In the doubles' quarterfinals, Bjork and Svensson dropped a close 7-5 decision to USF's Zoe Lazar and Margherita Marcon.
Saturday's lineup features five Eagles in singles quarterfinals across the three flights. Bjork will face USF's Paulina Montiel, Svensson will square off against FAU's Panna Bartha, Vargas will face Florida State's Abby Kelliher, Kotecha will play FAU's Malika Amirgalieva and Matz, who had a bye in singles competition, will face Stetson's Elizaveta Rozhkova.
Prior to the slew of singles quarterfinal matches, FGCU will get three doubles matches on the book in the consolation bracket. Matz and Vargas will play FIU's Jelena Vico and Sofia Fernandez Figueroa, Bjork and Svensson face FAU's Bartha and Katrin Pavkova and
Africa Burillo Berezak and Kotecha face North Florida's Zoe Dupaty and May Fadida.
Doubles action begins at 9 a.m. with singles competition beginning at 10:15 a.m.
