CARROLLTON, Ga. – Of FGCU's seven hits at West Georgia on Thursday night, four were doubles. That is no surprise to a team that entered the game ranked 13
th nationally and led the Atlantic Sun Conference in doubles.
The five errors that FGCU (19-10, 5-4 ASUN) committed, however, were a surprise to many. West Georgia (9-21, 6-4) capitalized on those five errors to score five unearned runs, the difference maker in a 9-4 loss to Wolves at Cole Field in Carrollton.
Jaret Nelson went 2-for-4 in the game with both of his hits going for extra bases. First it was his two-out double in the third inning and he followed that in the fifth with a two-out, three-run home run to left field.
Wilfred Gonzalez also tallied two hits in four at bats and drew a walk.
Hunter Possehl (1-1) was charged with the loss after allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits across 4 2/3 innings, while walking one and striking out three. Hyatt Richardson allowed three runs (one earned) on three hits in 3 1/3 innings in relief, while also walking one and striking out three.
Gonzalez's RBI double in the second inning brought Florida Gulf Coast's first run across the plate, but the Wolves scored five times in their half of the inning. Anthony Cole's two-RBI single and a throwing error contributed to UWG's five-run frame, putting them ahead 6–1 after two innings.
Nelson ignited Florida Gulf Coast's offense in the fifth with a three-run homer, his eighth of the season. This narrowed the gap to 6–4, but the Eagles couldn't score further in the inning.
The Wolves added two more runs in the seventh, one from a Schmitt RBI single and the other on a fielding error, extending their lead to 8–4. They added another unearned run in the eighth, to take a 9-4 lead.
FGCU will look to even the series on Friday when the two teams meet at Cole Field once again. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.
