CARROLLTON, Ga. – Florida Gulf Coast softball (15-25, 9-6 ASUN) prevailed in a Sunday shootout, 13-11, at West Georgia (13-31, 5-10).
K'Mari Williams hit her first career home run, a three-run blast, for FGCU in the third inning. The Eagles hung a seven spot in the fifth inning to take control of the game before adding three necessary insurance runs in the top of the sixth. The 13 runs scored tied the most runs FGCU has scored this season.
"I'm proud of our team's resolve today after a tough Saturday," head coach
Lindsay Fico said. "We hit well yesterday, just couldn't get much to fall. West Georgia did really well defensively to limit the big inning. Our bats carried us through the weekend.
"I'm happy K'Mari was the one for us to get things back on track. She's the epitome of the type of athlete and teammate we want to build this program around."
The Wolves spread out their offensive punch, scoring in every inning except the second and seventh, including a five-run sixth inning. West Georgia opened the scoring with a two-run triple from Madison McDonald in the first inning to go up 2-0.
Williams' long ball came in the top of the third after
Olivia Black and
Sietske Drijvers drew back-to-back walks, then executed a double steal to move into scoring position. Williams sent one over the fence in left field to give FGCU a 3-2 lead.
An error in the bottom of the third allowed West Georgia to tie the game at 3-3, and the Wolves retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth without recording a hit. Megan Waites drew a leadoff walk and moved to third on a passed ball and wild pitch. Zekylah Boyd was then hit by a pitch, stole second, and advanced to third on another wild pitch that scored Waites. Dixiana Sims drew another walk and was caught stealing by Drijvers, but Boyd scored on the play for a 5-3 West Georgia lead.
The Eagles offense erupted in the top half of the fifth.
Parris Wiggs and
Presley Smith hit consecutive singles to open the frame, and
Ally Thompson reached on an error that allowed Wiggs to score.
Sophie Wylie reached on a fielder's choice before back-to-back pinch hit knocks from
Mackenzie Leiti and
Kiki Daniels. Leiti brought in Thompson and Wylie with an RBI single, and Daniels moved Leiti to third with a double. Black walked to load the bases for
Sietske Drijvers, who added two more runs with an RBI single.
K'Mari Williams tacked on another run with a sacrifice fly, and Wiggs notched her second hit of the inning with an RBI single to score Drijvers and cap off the seven run frame.
Leiti added insurance runs for FGCU in the sixth, bringing home Wylie and Thompson on an RBI double. Black tacked on the 13th run of the game for the Eagles with a single that scored Leiti and put FGCU up 13-6.
West Georgia added five in the bottom half of the sixth, including a grand slam from Ella Oswalt, but FGCU held off the rally to secure the 13-11 win.
Willimas was one of five Eagles to record a multi-hit game along with a career high four RBI. Wiggs went 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored, and the trio of
Ally Thompson, Black and
Mackenzie Leiti all tallied a pair of hits. Black stole three bases to move to 96 career steals, and Wiggs had her second three hit game of the weekend. As a team, FGCU's six stolen bases is a single-game season high.
Grace Taylor (6-8) recorded the win for the Eagles in the circle on her birthday.
Next, FGCU finishes its seven-game road trip with a midweek tilt at No. 6/7 Florida at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15.
