CARROLLTON, Ga. – Florida Gulf Coast softball (14-24, 8-5 ASUN) took an early lead, but West Georgia (12-30, 4-9) came back to win the first game of Saturday's doubleheader 8-5.
Jenna Samuel went 3-for-4 with a home run, and Cacie Cutright added a 1-for-2 day with two RBI and two walks to pair with her complete game in the circle.Â
FGCU scored first with an RBI single from
Tiffany Meek, and made it 4-0 in the second inning with an RBI fielder's choice from
Julia Bacoulis and a two-run single from
Parris Wiggs. The Wolves answered with a big second inning, scoring five runs, including the go-ahead three run homer from Samuel.Â
West Georgia ended multiple FGCU scoring chances with three double plays turned in the game, off of two lineouts and a flyout. UWG added insurance runs with one in the third and two in the fifth to tally eight on the day.
Parris Wiggs,
Sietske Drijvers and
Presley Smith each had multi-hit games for the Eagles; Drijvers extended her on-base streak to 17 games despite the loss.
Meek drove in a run for FGCU in the top of the seventh, but the Eagles could not complete the rally, and fell 8-5.
