BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast softball (5-15) took an early lead, but dropped the second game of its midweek East Coast road trip 14-5 to FAU (17-6) on Wednesday.
Six Owls had multi-hit games, including three hits and two RBI from Yani Guzman, three RBI and two doubles from Jesiana Mora, and home runs from Lily Holtje and Chloe Yeatts.
FGCU jumped out in front 2-0 in the first inning behind back-to-back RBI singles from
Tiffany Meek and
Olivia Black. FAU answered with a five-spot in the bottom of the first in an offensive outburst after the first contest between the two squads ended with the Eagles on top, 3-2.
The Owls added another run in the second to take a 6-2 lead before the Eagles cut into the deficit with a third inning sac fly. FAU, which scored in every inning, added another run in the third to go up 7-3. FGCU's bats kept swinging, as
Sietske Drijvers and
Julia Bacoulis drove in a pair of runs in the fourth.
FAU would not be denied at the plate, though, and added three runs in the fifth before hitting a walk-off two-run home run in the sixth inning.
Meek had two RBI and Bacoulis scored two runs for FGCU in the loss.
Next, the Eagles will play their first series of the season at home against Troy (13-6), beginning on Saturday, March 7, at 1 p.m.
