Eagles Begin ASUN Tournament with First Round Matchup vs. Knights

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Florida Gulf Coast University women's basketball team (15-14, 11-7 ASUN) begins its postseason journey on Tuesday afternoon, traveling to Jacksonville, Fla., for a 2:30 p.m. tipoff at UNF Arena against No. 12 seed Bellarmine (2-29, 0-18) in the first round of the ASUN Tournament. The No. 5 seed Eagles enter the tournament looking to carry late-season momentum into March while hunting their 13th ASUN Tournament championship and 10th consecutive title. The winner advances to face No. 4 seed Stetson in the quarterfinals on Thursday, March 5 at 2:30 p.m. inside VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena.

Tuesday's contest marks the ninth all-time meeting between FGCU and Bellarmine and the first in ASUN Tournament history. The Eagles hold an 8-0 advantage in the series, including a 79-40 victory over the Knights on Feb. 5 in Fort Myers. In that matchup, FGCU dished out 24 assists on 30 made field goals, forced 22 turnovers, and converted those miscues into 34 points. Airah Lavy led the way with 15 points behind five three-pointers, while Nay Staton added 12 points and six rebounds. Jordan Campbell contributed 11 points, seven boards, and four assists, and Sinai Douglas totaled nine points and seven assists without committing a turnover as the Eagles combined a season-best performance from beyond the arc with their lowest turnover total of the season.

FGCU enters tournament play following a 67-55 home win over Stetson on Feb. 27 to close the regular season at 11-7 in conference play. In that victory, Douglas paced the Eagles with 16 points, while Staton added 15 and Eve Alexander provided 10 off the bench. Campbell controlled the glass with eight rebounds, and Anna Mortag chipped in eight points, including a pair of three-pointers, as FGCU shot 47.2 percent from the field and 35 percent from deep in a wire-to-wire performance.

Ahead of the postseason, FGCU also earned recognition in the league's annual awards. Sinai Douglas was named Third-Team All-ASUN after finishing the regular season ranked 15th in the conference in scoring (11.6 PPG) while also ranking tied for fourth in assists (3.5 APG) and tied for third in assist-to-turnover ratio. Karina Gordon and Jordan Campbell were both selected to the Academic All-ASUN Team, highlighting their excellence both on the court and in the classroom.

Bellarmine comes to Jacksonville after a 100-43 road loss at Eastern Kentucky on Feb. 27 to finish 0-18 in ASUN play. Kayce Hyman led the Knights with 19 points, attacking the paint and converting 7-of-7 free throws, while Ava Smith added 11 points. Bellarmine shot 27.7 percent from the field and 17.6 percent from three-point range in the contest, struggling to keep pace with EKU's transition attack and depth.

Over the course of the regular season, FGCU leaned on its defense to set the tone in conference play. In 18 conference matchups, the Eagles held opponents to the second-fewest points in the conference (56.4 per game), the third-lowest field goal percentage (36.7 percent), and the lowest three-point percentage (25.1 percent), while also allowing the second-fewest rebounds at 32.9 per contest. Offensively, FGCU averaged 62.6 points per game, shot 42.8 percent from the floor and 30.5 percent from beyond the arc, and averaged 12 assists per outing. Douglas leads the team at 11.6 points per game, while Staton follows at 10.9 points per contest. On the glass, Staton averages 5.5 rebounds per game, with Douglas close behind at 5.0, and Mortag provides rim protection at 0.7 blocks per contest.

Bellarmine averaged 49.4 points per game during the regular season while allowing 81.2. The Knights shot 31.8 percent from the field and 26.5 percent from three-point range, while being outrebounded by an average of over 12 boards per game. Triniti Ralston leads the team in scoring average at 13.9 points per game, while Smith (10.1 PPG) and Hyman (10.0 PPG) also average double figures. Smith provides much of Bellarmine's perimeter production with 55 made three-pointers, and Hyman remains a focal point offensively with her ability to attack the paint and get to the free-throw line. The Knights also average 20.2 turnovers per contest, an area FGCU will look to capitalize on with defensive pressure and transition offense.

Keys to the game for the Eagles will center on pushing the pace in transition, attacking the perimeter offensively, and locking down Hyman on the defensive end. FGCU's ability to generate stops and convert them into quick scoring opportunities has been a hallmark of its success, particularly in its previous meeting with Bellarmine. Limiting second-chance points and maintaining defensive intensity will be critical in a win-or-go-home setting.

Elsewhere in the first round of the ASUN Tournament, Austin Peay faces Lipscomb, West Georgia takes on North Florida, and North Alabama squares off with Queens. Top seeds Eastern Kentucky, Jacksonville, Central Arkansas, and Stetson all earned first-round byes and await quarterfinal matchups.

For FGCU, the focus is clear: defend at a high level, share the basketball, and embrace the urgency of March. With a trip to the quarterfinals on the line, the Eagles will look to continue building on their late-season momentum and extend their season in Jacksonville.
