FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU, beleaguered by injuries and down to only four players, still managed a point and pushed No. 68 ETSU (13-3) in two other singles matches despite dropping a 6-1 final Tuesday morning.
Florida Gulf Coast (8-10) earned its sole point with a victory at the No. 2 singles position as
Pablo Paternostro defeated Martin Vergara, 6-4, 6-3.
ETSU secured the doubles point with a victory on court one after already claiming the third doubles match due to a lack of healthy players on the FGCU side. At No. 1 doubles, Oscar Martinez and Martin Vergara defeated
Stefan Correa and Paternostro, 6-3.
After defaults at Nos. 5 and 6 singles gave ETSU the 3-1 lead, the Bucs clinched the match when Carlos Gonzales won at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-1, against
CJ Smith. Paternostro then earned FGCU's point at No. 2 singles by defeating Vergara, 6-4, 6-3.
The Bucs extended the margin at No. 1 singles, where Martinez triumphed over Povey, 7-5, 6-4. The match concluded with East Tennessee State's Kalocsai overcoming Correa in a deciding set at No. 3 singles, 6-7(2), 6-1, 10-6.
The Eagles have a week to recover before Delaware visits the FGCU Tennis Complex on Tuesday, Mar. 24. First serve is set for Noon.
