FGCU returns home to host Cleveland State, Liberty

Eagles set for pair of matches at FGCU Tennis Complex

FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU looks to defend The Nest with a pair of home matches this week as Cleveland State (Wednesday) and Liberty (Friday) both visit Fort Myers and the FGCU Tennis Complex. Both matches are set to begin at 10 a.m.

The Eagles (10-4, 0-1 Atlantic Sun) look to return to its standard after a challenging weekend trip. Florida Gulf Coast lost a 4-1 match to Lipscomb last Saturday then lost a match to weather scheduled at North Alabama.

Nora Svensson (15-4) and Sabrina Jaramillo (15-5) each lead FGCU in singles action. Both ladies, along with Anjali Kotecha (12-7), have won seven of their past eight singles matches entering Wednesday's contest.

Cleveland State (3-10) is coming off a 4-3 win at Dayton on Friday. Lea Geisz leads the Vikings with an 11-14 singles record while Ella Franz stands at 10-14 in singles. Franz has seen the most improvement as of late, posting a 5-5 mark in singles over her past 10 decisions with all five of those wins coming at No. 2 singles.

FGCU and Cleveland State have only met once prior, with the Eagles claiming a 6-1 win over the Vikings on Mar. 15, 2022 in Fort Myers. Florida Gulf Coast is putting an unblemished mark against the Horizon League on the line Wednesday, having gone 7-0 all-time against current Horizon League programs.

Friday's match against Liberty (9-4) will reunite two former ASUN rivals. The Flames, despite having won four of their past five matches, recently dropped out of the national rankings after reaching as high as No. 69 this year. Celina Joseph leads Liberty with a 17-8 singles record and has gone 8-2 over her last 10 matches. She joins every single member of the Liberty roster with a winning record in dual match singles play.

FGCU and Liberty have met seven times before Friday's contest, all of which have come in either ASUN regular season or ASUN Tournament play. Florida Gulf Coast currently has a 6-1 mark against Liberty, Liberty, Liberty (the Flames, not the Emus) with a 4-1 record in Fort Myers. The only loss in that span came in the 2022 ASUN Tournament hosted by FGCU.

Now members of Conference USA, Liberty has won four of its past five matches as it heads to Fort Myers. FGCU has a 33-11 all-time mark against C-USA programs and has won six straight against the league, with a 22-5 mark at home.
