GAINESVILLE, Fla. — FGCU dropped a challenging match at No. 23 Florida Saturday afternoon in a 4-0 decision at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex.
The Eagles faced uphill odds on the road against a ranked opponent that fielded two singles players ranked in the top 50 in the nation.
After the Gators Florida took the doubles point with victories at No. 1 doubles and No. 2 doubles, Florida extended its lead with a win at No. 4 singles as Kevin Edengren defeated
Gustav Hasslegren, 6-1, 6-0. At No. 3 singles, No. 32 Pablo Perez Ramos added another point for the Gators, topping
Pablo Paternostro with a 6-3, 7-5 scoreline. The 23rd-ranked Gators clinched the overall match victory when No. 50 Henry Jefferson secured a 6-2, 6-2 win over
Tanner Povey at No. 1 singles.
Florida took the doubles point with victories at No. 1 doubles and No. 2 doubles. Lorenzo Claverie and Henry Jefferson secured a 6-0 win over
Jonathan Baron and
Gustav Hasslegren at No. 1 doubles. Tanapatt Nirundorn and Pablo Perez Ramos followed with a 6-2 victory against
Pablo Paternostro and
Tanner Povey at No. 2 doubles. The match at No. 3 doubles was left unfinished with Kevin Edengren and Andreas Timini leading 5-3 against
Stefan Correa and
Stavros Hadjivarnava.
In singles, Florida extended their lead with a win at No. 4 singles as Edengren defeated Hasslegren 6-1, 6-0. At No. 3 singles, Perez Ramos added another point for the Gators, overcoming Paternostro with a 6-3, 7-5 scoreline. The Gators clinched the overall match victory when Jefferson secured a 6-2, 6-2 win over Povey at No. 1 singles.
The remaining singles matches were left unfinished, thwarting FGCU's best chance at altering the scoreboard. That includes the battle at No. 6 singles where FGCU's
Stefan Correa was battling back with second set momentum, leading 4-2 when the match concluded after dropping the opening frame, 6-4.
FGCU (1-6) returns to action on Feb. 20 when the Eagles head to Florida Atlantic for a 1 p.m. match in Boca Raton.
