Eagles set for regular season finale at Stetson

FGCU controls own destiny for No. 5 seed in ASUN Championship

DELAND, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast men's basketball (14-16, 8-9 ASUN) will play for the No. 5 seed in the ASUN Championship at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Stetson (10-20, 6-11).

The Eagles control their own destiny to the No. 5 seed with a win over the Hatters on Saturday. EKU and West Georgia (7-10) sit one game back of FGCU in the standings. FGCU owns the tiebreaker with UWG, but EKU holds the head-to-head result over the Eagles. In the event of a 3-way tie, EKU would receive the No. 5 seed, FGCU would earn the No. 6 seed and UWG would get the No. 7 seed.

Austin Peay, Central Arkansas, Queens and Lipscomb have clinched the top four seeds and first round byes. North Alabama will be the No. 12 seed and FGCU's first round opponent should the Eagles get the No. 5 seed. Bellarmine, Jacksonville and Stetson are all 6-11 in ASUN play; North Florida is 5-12 and could add itself to the tiebreaking scenarios with a win over the Dolphins on Saturday.

The last time out, JR Konieczny delivered a 31 point, 10 rebound double-double. The Eagles came up short, though, 76-60, against North Florida despite holding a seven point halftime lead. Konieczny's 15.5 points per game are the fifth best mark in the ASUN and his 6.5 rebounds per game are fourth in the conference.

Stetson enters at 6-11, looking to improve its position in the conference standings in the regular season finale. The Hatters lost 89-85 at home to Jacksonville on Thursday. They split their two other matchups since last playing FGCU, defeating North Florida 76-71 but falling to Central Arkansas 88-76.

The Hatters are led by Ethan Copeland, who scores 14.3 points and records 1.5 steals per game. Collin Kuhl, who had a 28 point, 12 rebound double-double in the first game against FGCU, averages 13.3 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. Calvin Sirmans III dishes out 4.7 assists per game, and the Hatters block two shots per game as a team.

FGCU won the first contest between the two squads 78-76 at Alico Arena on February 14 thanks to a go-ahead layup from Rahmir Barno with 20 seconds to play. The win was the Eagles' fourth straight win over Stetson. FGCU leads the all-time series with the Hatters 28-13.
