FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU was unable to overcome four errors and nine walks issued in a 10-4 loss to Boston College at Swanson Stadium Friday night.
FGCU (8-2) allowed BC (5-3) to rally back from a 4-0 deficit after the fifth inning, yielding 10 runs over three consecutive frames in the loss.
Jeremy Comer went 3-for-4 to lead FGCU offensively, including a 426-foot shot to deep center to lead off the fifth.
Javier Gorostola added a 3-for-5 performance while
Jon Embury went 2-for-5 at the plate.
However, the homestanding Eagles struggled to drive in runs. Of the 10 runners left aboard, four were stranded in scoring position. Defensively, Florida Gulf Coast's miscues were too much to overcome as the four errors committed led to four unearned runs in the defeat.
Preston Rogers (1-1) was charged with the loss, allowing three unearned runs on three hits while issuing two walks.
Evan Dempsey allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits across five innings in the start, striking out seven but walking five.
Levent Eldem and
Reed Biemiller each saw time on the mound, but joined the quartet of FGCU pitchers that issued nine walks and hit two batters while striking out 11 in the game.
Ty Mainolfi led BC with a 3-for-5 performance, scoring three runs and drawing a walk. Ben Williams contributed two hits and four RBIs in four at-bats. Cesar Gonzalez (2-0) was credited with the win after holding FGCU scoreless on two hits over 1 1/3 innings and Gavin Soares (2) followed with the save, throwing three shutout innings while allowing only three hits and striking out six.
The two teams meet again Saturday evening at Swanson Stadium in Fort Myers for the second game in the three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
