DURHAM, N.C. – FGCU's
Evan Dempsey continued to rack up the awards this week as
Baseball America named him to its 14-player National Team of the Week, the organization announced Tuesday morning.
Of the 14 players recognized, only three – Dempsey included – came from mid-major programs, along with Makoa Sniffen (Saint Mary's) and Griffin Naess (Cal Poly).
Dempsey filled up the stat sheet in the second week of action. At the plate, he went 6-for-15 with a home run, two doubles, two RBIs, six runs scored and four walks against two strikeouts. On the mound, he added seven shutout innings in a Friday start against Stonehill, allowing two hits and striking out seven with just one walk. Dempsey was a
preseason third-team All-America selection by Baseball America.
He has been a key component of a 7-0 start for the Eagles this season, the best start to a season in school history and leaving FGCU just one of 18 programs still without a blemish on its record.
For Dempsey, the announcement follows his selection as the Atlantic Sun Conference Pitcher of the Week for the second consecutive week, which came on Monday.
FGCU continues its season-opening homestand on Tuesday when Indiana State visits Fort Myers once again in a two-game mid-week series between two of the top mid-major programs in the country.
Tickets are on sale for the games on
Tuesday and
Wednesday, both of which begin at 6:30 p.m.
