FGCU rallies for another win, sets record with 6-0 start to season

Eagles secure sixth consecutive series win

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The 2026 edition of FGCU baseball achieved something no other Eagles team has accomplished before with their 4-3 win over Stonehill College Saturday evening. This year's squad became the first FGCU team to start a season 6-0.

Like in the previous five games in this young season, they defied odds and did so in dramatic fashion.

The Eagles overcame 10 runners left on base, an 0-for-15 mark with runners in scoring position and a one-run deficit entering the eighth inning to claim the victory and secure the program's sixth consecutive series win dating back to last season.

To achieve all of that, FGCU rallied with two runs in the eighth inning, capitalizing on a crucial error by the Skyhawks (0-6).

Freshman Hyatt Richardson (2-0) was credited with the win after shutting down Stonehill over the final two innings, allowing only two hits while striking out four. He combined with starter Chris Diaz to tally 13 strikeouts in the game, bringing the pitching staff's total to 89 through six games this season. Stonehill's Hunter Bell (0-1) was charged with the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits in 3 1/3 innings on the mound.

The rally in the eighth created the first lead of the game for the Green & Blue, who had trailed since the third. Jaret Nelson walked, stole second, and advanced to third on a throwing error. Drew Seidel, pinch running for Wilfred Gonzalez, also stole second. Cayden Hessemyer reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Nelson to score and tie the game. A sacrifice fly from Tyler Herb brought Seidel home, giving FGCU its first and final lead of the game at 4-3.

The Skyhawks got on the board first when Armanis Romero reached on a throwing error and later stole home, scoring the first run of the game. Ryan LeClair, who had walked, advanced to second and scored on Sam Parks' RBI single, giving the Skyhawks a 2-0 advantage.

FGCU responded in the fifth inning as Jon Embury crushed a home run 421 feet to deep left field, cutting the deficit to one. That marked the third home run of the year for the Eagles' catcher
Stonehill added to its lead in the sixth inning with LeClair doubling and later scoring on Eisig Chin's RBI double, extending the lead to 3-1.

In the seventh inning, Evan Dempsey doubled and scored on Javier Gorostola's groundout, narrowing the gap to 3-2. Gorostola is now tied with Embury to lead the team with 10 RBIs each.

First pitch for Sunday's series finale is set for 11 a.m. at Swanson Stadium. FGCU LHP Hunter Possehl (0-0, 1.93 ERA) is projected to face Stonehill RHP Noah Durham (0-1, 3.86 ERA).
