FORT MYERS, Fla. – Evan Dempsey tossed a complete game shutout and a potent FGCU offense exploded, highlighted by three home runs, as the Eagles secured a commanding 10-0 (7 inn.) victory over Stonehill College Friday evening.
The win moved FGCU to 5-0 on the year, matching the 2004 team for the best start to a season in school history. That team's win streak ended at five, meaning a chance for history awaits the Eagles on Saturday for the second game in this three-game series against Stonehill.
Despite the lopsided victory, FGCU (5-0) still found a way to create a walk-off win – their fourth walk-off win in five games this year – after
Jon Embury hit a hard line drive 371 feet over the left field wall to end the game in the seventh, 10-0.
Embury led the Eagle offense with a 3-for-5 performance including two home runs, four RBIs and three runs scored.
Javier Gorostola also was impressive, going 4-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored while also hitting a home run.
Dempsey (1-0) was on the mound for all seven innings, allowing only two hits and a walk while striking out seven in his second start of the year. Stonehill (0-5) only threatened in the first when Ryan LeClair eventually reached third after a leadoff single, but Dempsey retired the next 10 Skyhawk batters to quell any threat.
Ryan Douglas (0-2) was charged with the loss for Stonehill after allowing five runs on seven hits in three innings on the mound.

The Eagles dominated the game against Stonehill, starting strong in the first inning. Dempsey singled up the middle, followed by Embury's single through the left side, putting runners on first and third.
Javier Gorostola then doubled to right center, driving in Dempsey and Embury.
Jaret Nelson added a sacrifice fly to score Gorostola and put FGCU ahead 3-0 at the end of the first inning.
In the third inning, Embury homered 410-feet to deep left field, his first of the season, extending the Eagles' lead. Gorostola later singled and advanced on a wild pitch, setting up
Wilfred Gonzalez to single through the left side, scoring Gorostola. Florida Gulf Coast led 5-0 through three innings.
The fourth inning saw
Nathan Gagnon single up the middle, and Dempsey doubled down the right field line to bring Gagnon home, increasing the lead to 6-0.
Gorostola's performance continued in the sixth inning, as he hit a solo home run to center field, his first of the season, making the score 7-0.
The Green & Blue sealed the victory in the seventh inning. Brandyn Gonzalez doubled, followed by a walk to Dempsey. That set the stage for Embury to hit his second home run of the game, a three-run shot to left field, bringing the score to 10-0.
The second game of the three-game series between the two teams is set for Saturday at 5 p.m. FGCU is projected to start RHP
Chris Diaz (0-0, 23.15 ERA) while Stonehill is expected to throw RHP Jimmy Gilleran (0-0, 0.00 ERA).
