Eagles Dominate Bears, Oh My!

FGCU downs Mercer, 6-1

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Homecoming Weekend at FGCU was kicked off in successful fashion Friday as FGCU's women's tennis team disposed of Mercer, 6-1, to remain undefeated at The Nest this season.

FGCU (7-2) is now 7-0 at home this season and handed Mercer (6-3) its first defeat since Feb. 7. The win extended FGCU's all-time record over former Atlantic Sun Conference member Mercer to 12-1.

After battling for the doubles point, singles points came quickly and smoothly for the Eagles. Cecilie Maeland delivered a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Sofiya Tsitavets at No. 3 singles, while Anjali Kotecha followed with a 6-3, 6-1 win against Marie Bannmeyer at No. 4 singles for her 11th singles win of the year. June Bjork, ranked No. 120 nationally, continued the momentum at No. 2 singles by defeating Tea Zivic, 6-2, 6-1 to secure the team win for the Eagles.

Once the match victory was secured, Sabrina Jaramillo continued the scoring for the Eagles with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Jelena Gojkovic at No. 6 singles. Ashley Matz battled back after dropping the first set to Ines Homberg Fernandez at No. 5 singles to claim a 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (10-3) victory. The final singles match at No. 1 saw Marina de Diego Quinones edge out Svensson, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).

Earlier in doubles, FGCU secured the point with victories at No. 3 doubles and No. 2 doubles. Cecilie Maeland and Ashley Matz opened with a commanding 6-2 win over Bannmeyer and Antonia Schweigel at No. 3 doubles, remaining undefeated in doubles action this year. Mercer claimed a win at No. 1 doubles, where de Diego Quinones and Homberg Fernandez defeated Nora Svensson and Kotecha, 6-2.

The duo of June Bjork and Africa Burillo Berezak clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 decision against Tsitavets and Zivic at No. 2.

FGCU will host Arkansas State (3-3) on Sunday at 10 a.m. at the FGCU Tennis Complex while Mercer and Arkansas State will battle Saturday in Fort Myers.
