JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – After recording a career-high 12 strikeouts over 6.0 innings last Friday, FGCU pitcher
Evan Dempsey has been named the Atlantic Sun Conference's Pitcher of the Week.
This marks the second overall ASUN weekly award Dempsey has earned, and the second consecutive week of regular season play in which the league has recognized the Tampa native. He was named the conference's Player of the Week on May 12, 2025, the final week of awards issued by the ASUN last season.
A junior right-handed pitcher, Dempsey was masterful on the mound on opening night. He tossed six complete innings of shutout ball, allowing only two hits and no walks while mowing down 12 North Dakota State batters. That set the tone for a weekend where the Eagles registered a national-leading 57 strikeouts on the weekend, the most strikeouts recorded over a three-game span in school history.
Not to be outdone on the mound, Dempsey posted a .788 on-base percentage across the final two games of the series with six runs scored while drawing three walks and getting hit by two pitches. The six runs scored by Dempsey all occurred in Saturday's game against the Bison, tying the school record for runs scored in a game.
FGCU (3-0) hosts Minnesota (3-0) on Wednesday evening at Swanson Stadium. The Golden Gophers make the trek down to Fort Myers following a weekend in DeLand where they beat Stetson, 11-5, then topped St. John's and Ball State by identical 8-0 scores.
Wednesday's game is set for a 6:30 p.m. start with Minnesota Twins bullpen coach and former pitcher Latroy Hawkins set to throw out the first pitch. Tickets remain
