FGCU and Stetson Set for Saturday Afternoon Clash

DELAND, Fla. - The Florida Gulf Coast University women's basketball team (12-12, 8-5 ASUN) continues on the road Saturday for a key ASUN battle against the Stetson Hatters (15-9, 8-5) at 2 p.m. inside the Insight Credit Union Arena at Edmunds Center in DeLand, Fla.

Saturday's contest marks the 44th all-time meeting between the Eagles and the Hatters, with FGCU holding a commanding 38-5 advantage in the series. The Eagles have also controlled recent matchups, including an 86-60 road victory in DeLand in the last meeting on March 1, 2025, behind 22 points and eight rebounds from Emani Jefferson and 13 points and nine boards from Lauryn Taylor.

FGCU enters the weekend coming off a 55-51 road win at North Florida on Thursday night to move to 8-5 in the ASUN. The Eagles leaned on their defense down the stretch, holding the Ospreys to just seven points in the fourth quarter. Sinai Douglas led the way with a game-high 23 points, while Nay Staton added 10 points and a team-best eight rebounds in the win. FGCU also generated key transition offense late and forced timely stops to secure the road victory.

Stetson also comes into Saturday's matchup at 8-5 in the conference after a 76-70 road loss at Jacksonville on Thursday. Mary McMillan delivered a standout performance with 33 points on 11-of-20 shooting, including four three-pointers, while Aleah Sorrentino added 11 points and six rebounds. The Hatters stayed within striking distance throughout the night, but Jacksonville's late surge proved to be the difference.

FGCU has built its identity around defense throughout conference play, and that approach continues to separate the Eagles within the league. Entering Saturday, FGCU is holding ASUN opponents to a league-low 54.6 points per game, the lowest field goal percentage at 36.3 percent and the lowest three-point percentage at 24.8 percent, while also allowing the second-fewest rebounds per game at 32.7. Individually, Douglas leads the Eagles at 11.5 points per game and ranks among the league leaders in assists, assist-to-turnover ratio and steals, while Staton follows closely at 11.2 points per game and is second in the ASUN in free throw percentage at 81.1 percent. Defensively, Anna Mortag and Eve Alexander provide rim protection, combining for consistent shot-blocking presence inside.

Offensively this season, FGCU is averaging 62.8 points per game while shooting 43.7 percent from the field and 29.9 percent from three. The Eagles have also controlled the glass at 35.4 rebounds per game and continue to rely on Douglas as a primary creator at 3.3 assists per game, while Staton leads the team on the boards at 5.8 rebounds per contest. FGCU's balance across the lineup has allowed multiple players to contribute on any given night while maintaining efficiency and pace.

Stetson enters the weekend averaging 70.5 points per game and shooting 43.2 percent from the floor, while connecting at a 33.9 percent clip from beyond the arc. The Hatters also average 36.5 rebounds per game and have shown the ability to score in spurts behind their guard play. Cameron Thomas leads the team at 16.7 points per game and is one of Stetson's top perimeter threats, while McMillan adds 13.0 points per contest. Inside, Aleah Sorrentino provides a steady presence on the glass, and Promise Keshi contributes in multiple areas, including rebounding and defensive activity.

For FGCU, the keys to the game remain consistent, continue to improve game by game, protect the paint, guard the perimeter, limit unforced turnovers and push the tempo in transition. With both teams tied in the ASUN standings, Saturday's matchup carries added importance as the Eagles look to maintain momentum and continue setting the tone defensively.

Following Saturday's road contest, FGCU returns to Alico Arena on Thursday, Feb. 19, to host Eastern Kentucky at 7 p.m. in a Pink Out game for Play 4 Kay Night.
