Svensson named ASUN Player of the Week

This marks Svensson’s first ASUN weekly honor

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast women's tennis was recognized once again early in the season as sophomore Nora Svensson was named the Atlantic Sun Conference's Player of the Week on Tuesday afternoon.

This marks the first such recognition for Svensson, an economics major who hails from Västerås, Sweden. It is the first time since 2017 and only the third time overall that FGCU has claimed multiple ASUN Player of the Week honors by mid-February, as Anjali Kotecha was recognized with the award on Jan. 27. The Eagles are currently 5-1 on the year.

Now 11-1 this year in doubles and 11-3 in singles, Svensson was the deciding factor in FGCU's historic 4-2 win at USF last week, remaining undefeated in doubles this season and then rallying in singles as her three-set win over USF's Melisa Senli clinched the match point for the Eagles. The win marked FGCU's first win over the Bulls in Tampa in eight tries and spoiled the debut and inaugural match at USF's new multi-million-dollar tennis facility.

She paired with Anjali Kotecha at No. 1 doubles, and their 6-4 win was the deciding doubles point. That pushed the sophomore tandem to 11-0 on the year, including a 3-0 mark at No. 1 doubles. At No. 1 singles, Svensson rallied back from a setback in the opening frame and claimed a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over USF's top player to clinch the historic win in Tampa, 4-2, and to push her singles mark this season to 11-3. Moreover, Svensson was one of just three ASUN players to go undefeated last week at No. 1 doubles and No. 1 singles and of the three, the sophomore Eagle player was the only one who was not a senior.

The Eagles return to action on Friday when FGCU will travel to Boca Raton for a Noon match at Florida Atlantic.
