JACKSONVILLE, Fla.- The Florida Gulf Coast Eagles will take the field in a familiar position Sunday as they battle North Florida at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville. A late season ASUN matchup with a chance to clinch the ASUN regular season championship for the 13
th time in program history.
The Eagles and Ospreys do battle for the second time in as many weeks after FGCU took a heated 2-1 decision to knock North Florida from the ranks of the ASUN unbeatens at Pickering Field.
FGCU goes into Sunday's game on a five-game winning streak, pushing to the top of the ASUN standings in the process. The Eagles sit with 20 points with two games left to go, four points ahead of second place North Florida and nine in front of the rest of the pack. The Eagles have netted 29 goals to lead the ASUN this season, but in their past two wins, it has been their backline leading the way, pitching back-to-back shutouts of Stetson and Jacksonville for clean sheet numbers six and seven on the year.
History is on the line in two different ways for the Eagles on Sunday. First, a win would give FGCU their 10
th victory of the season, marking the 19
th consecutive complete season that the Eagles reached double digit victories. The only season in program history in which they didn't was the Covid shortened 2020 campaign. Next, and more importantly, any result for the Eagles Sunday would clinch the program's 13
th ASUN regular season championship. If that happens, it would give FGCU either the ASUN regular season or tournament championship in 15 of the past 17 seasons.
The Ospreys were the second ASUN team to clinch a postseason spot, right behind the Eagles. North Florida still has championship aspirations, but must defeat FGCU Sunday to keep those hopes alive.
UNF is the second highest scoring team in the league behind FGCU with 26 goals on the season, led by the conference's leading scorer in Paige McSwigan who has found the back of the net nine times this season, three more than any other player in the conference. The Ospreys come into Sunday's test winners of five of their last seven, all five of the wins coming via shutout.
The Eagles (9-1-5, 6-0-2) and Ospreys (8-4-4, 5-2-1) are set for a 1 p.m. kick Sunday at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville. The game will stream live on ESPN+.
