FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Eagles (9-9, 5-2 ASUN) continue action at Alico Arena on Saturday for a noon matchup against Lipscomb (6-12, 3-4), as the Eagles look to bounce back at home and continue building momentum in conference play.
Saturday's contest marks the 38th all-time meeting between the programs, with FGCU owning a spotless 37-0 record in the series. The most recent matchup came just two weeks ago on Jan. 10 in Nashville, when the Eagles pulled away for a 63-42 victory.
Nay Staton led the way with a season-high 21 points and eight rebounds,
Eve Alexander added 11 points and eight boards, and
Sinai Douglas chipped in eight points and five assists as FGCU's defense dictated the tempo for all four quarters.
FGCU enters the weekend coming off a 74-66 home setback to Austin Peay on Thursday night, dropping the Eagles to 5-2 in conference play. FGCU stayed within striking distance throughout before the Governors used a strong third quarter to create separation. Alexander provided a spark inside with a team-high 18 points on efficient shooting, while Staton finished with 15 points and Douglas added 12, continuing to pressure the defense on both ends of the floor.
Despite the loss, the Eagles' defensive identity has remained consistent in conference action. Against ASUN opponents this season, FGCU is holding teams to a league-low 53.3 points per game, the third-lowest field-goal percentage at 36.1 percent, and the second-lowest three-point shooting percentage at 21.7 percent, while also allowing the second-fewest rebounds per game at 32.3. That defensive pressure has fueled transition opportunities and allowed FGCU to control games by limiting clean perimeter looks and second-chance chances.
Offensively, FGCU continues to lean on a balanced rotation led by Douglas and Staton, who are both averaging just over 10 points per game while handling significant responsibilities on the defensive end. Alexander has been a steady presence in the paint, providing efficient scoring and rebounding, while
Karina Gordon and
Cerina Rolle give the Eagles perimeter shooting and playmaking to complement their interior attack.
Lipscomb arrives in Fort Myers looking to rebound from a 66-60 road loss at Stetson on Thursday, which dropped the Bisons to 3-4 in the ASUN. McKayla Miller led Lipscomb with 20 points, while Taylor Bowen posted a strong all-around performance with 19 points and 13 rebounds as the Bisons battled throughout but were outscored in key stretches.
On the season, Lipscomb averages 60.9 points per game and shoots 38.8 percent from the field, relying heavily on Miller and Molly Heard to generate offense from the perimeter. Bowen anchors the interior, leading the team on the glass, while Elena Bertrand and Taylor Bowen provide additional scoring options. Defensively, the Bisons have been active in passing lanes, but will need to limit turnovers and control the rebounding margin to stay competitive.
For FGCU, the focus remains on steady improvement as the season progresses. Defensively, the Eagles will look to protect the perimeter, limit unforced turnovers, and control the glass to dictate the pace on both ends of the floor.
Following Saturday's matchup, FGCU heads back on the road, traveling to Central Arkansas for a Thursday night contest on Jan. 29. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET / 6:30 p.m. CT in Conway.
