CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Eagles (8-8, 4-1 ASUN) close out their four-game road stretch on Saturday, traveling to Charlotte, North Carolina, for a 2 p.m. matchup against Queens (7-9, 1-4 ASUN) inside Curry Arena. The Eagles look to respond and continue building momentum on the road.
Saturday's contest marks the sixth all-time meeting between the two programs, with FGCU holding a perfect 5-0 record in the series. The most recent matchup came on Jan. 16, 2025, in Charlotte, when the Eagles earned a 69-47 victory by controlling the paint and getting contributions from multiple positions across the lineup. FGCU received strong performances in that win from
Khamari Mitchell-Steen,
Lauryn Taylor,
Cerina Rolle, and
Emani Jefferson.
FGCU comes into the matchup following a 63-56 road loss at West Georgia on Thursday, Jan. 15. The Eagles battled throughout and made a push late, with
Nay Staton (13 points and 10 rebound) and
Sinai Douglas (11 points, five rebounds, and four assists) providing steady offense, while
Cerina Rolle (seven points and five rebounds) and
Eve Alexander (seven points, two rebounds, and two blocks) made their presence felt on the glass and on the defensive end. Despite the setback, FGCU remains near the top of the ASUN standings as conference play continues.
Through the first portion of the season, FGCU has leaned on its defense to set the tone in conference action. Entering Saturday, the Eagles are holding opponents to 60.7 points per game, the third fewest in the league, while limiting teams to 37.4 percent shooting from the field and just 26.2 percent from three-point range. FGCU also ranks among the league's best in rebounding defense, allowing only 35.3 rebounds per contest. Offensively, Douglas has led the Eagles with consistent perimeter scoring, Staton has provided a reliable presence inside, and Rolle continues to anchor the defense while contributing across the stat sheet. Ball movement has also been a point of emphasis, as FGCU looks to hunt assists and generate quality looks.
Queens enters Saturday's matchup coming off a 69-61 home loss to Stetson, dropping the Royals to 1-4 in the ASUN. Dayuna Colvin led the Royals with 16 points, Jermany Mapp added 12 points, and Hannah Hicks was efficient inside, finishing with eight points and seven rebounds. Queens stayed competitive into the fourth quarter but struggled to find consistency from the perimeter.
On the season, the Royals are averaging just over 60 points per game, with Colvin and Mapp serving as the primary offensive options. Colvin leads the team in scoring and minutes played, while Mapp provides scoring and playmaking from the backcourt. Hicks has been effective around the basket, shooting a high percentage and helping Queens on the glass. The Royals will look to improve their efficiency and rebounding as conference play moves forward.
For the Eagles, the focus remains on steady improvement as the ASUN schedule unfolds. FGCU will look to continue getting better game by game, emphasize rebounding and transition opportunities, and play unselfish basketball by creating assists. Attention to detail on both ends of the floor will be key as the Eagles aim to respond on the road.
Following Saturday's contest, FGCU returns home to host Austin Peay on Thursday, Jan. 22, at 7 p.m. inside Alico Arena.
